Apps

Please read these guidelines carefully, as failure to complete the application properly may result in a need for revision or outright rejection. Be sure that you have also read the Rules and General Info pages, the latter of which contains information necessary to write your RP sample.

Apping New Characters

In general, all answers besides the first two should be answered in full sentences with a reasonable grasp of the English language. Run it through a spell-checker; make your Grammar Nazi friend take a look at it. Nothing here needs to be a college thesis, but a little proof-reading can go a long way. We do not demand that your paragraph breaks come at an editorially ideal point, but we do demand that they exist.

We are also looking for insight over length. A longer application is not always better! Take the space you need to give a well-thought-out answer, but walls and walls of text will definitely not speed up the approval process.

Contact/Personal Info
A comment separate from your app with your name, preferred journal, and email. Making it a separate comment lets us know who you are, but lets us keep your email address screened.

Canon (and version, if applicable)
Should be pretty straightforward!

Reference Picture and Wiki link (again, if applicable)
Again, pretty straightforward!

Point in the time-line taken Whether the character comes from the end of the series or a point partway through. For characters being apped from ongoing canons, we ask that you pick a definite spot to start from, though you are welcome to add memories past that point when your canon progresses.

Character History
A brief summary of your characters history, just so the mods have at least a little background to go on. This section generally need be no longer than 300 words, and if it takes up more than an entire comment you have done it wrong.

Motivation
Basically, why this character would willingly agree to come to Sabra. What you write in here isn't set in stone, especially for ongoing canons, and doesn't have to be that SPECIFIC WISH, but show us you're thinking about it at the least!

Canon Personality
Can be a little longer than the history, if necessary.

Blank Personality
The most important section! Please explain what personality traits you believe your character will lose and retain upon arriving in Sabra La Tau and why. Analysis of why your characters do what they do, and how their memories shape those actions is necessary to give an acceptable answer to this section; simply listing how your character will act is not enough.

Some characters may act in an extremely similar fashion to their canon selves and some may act radically different. However, in either case, we want you to explain why. We want the players to chose for themselves what their character would be like sans memories, but unsupportable (or simply unsupported) answers will be rejected.

Writing Sample
Your character receives the recording that all Blanks receive upon awakening. Describe both the recording and your character's reaction in a ~300 word third-person sample. Yes, it may seem strange to have a third-person sample required in a first-person RP, however, this will give you a chance to show off your grasp of both the canon and Blank incarnation of your character. Don't worry about your purple prose or deadly allergy to adverbs; what we are looking for here is characterization and an interesting spin. Please also keep in mind what can and can't be in that video.

As a general rule of thumb, we tend to prefer apps that describe the Blanks' reaction to seeing themselves in the message over the ones that concentrate on the Blanks' reaction to the room or their own sense of confusion. Introspection is key! How would your Blank's reaction be different from other Blanks?

Reapping Dropped Characters

This app form is for those of you who have dropped a character and wish to pick that character back up. It is NOT for a player who wishes to app a character that someone else has dropped; those characters will use the normal app form and start over as a fresh Blank.

Character Name:

State before they left:
Give a brief description of the character's emotions/state of mind up to the point where they stopped being an active character.

IC day they were dropped:
Gives a good idea of how much IC time they've been away.

Destination:
Where were they, and, if they were with a judge, what was their time away like? For instance, if you went off to frolic with the Foreman, you spent time working just like he said! You were super happy and well fed. You feel like you had the springtime of your life but you really can't remember any of the details! Why? Because you were a giant cave ant at the time! You lucky dog. While it's not strictly necessary to go into much detail about your life as an ant, it makes Foreman conversations in the future more fun.

Reaction to their time away:
This section will vary depending on where your character ended up. Also, if you wish to reset your character and have them join a different unit, this is the place to let us know!
- If they were in the pillar, how will it affect your character to have been completely immobilized, in a semi-conscious state, for the aforementioned amount of time?
- If they were with the Foreman, they spent their time away as a GIANT ANT. What effects did their time away have on them? Mood improvement? Strength and constitution up? Just put on muscle weight? Regained health? Zen with the world?
- If they were with their unit's patron or otherwise away, how was it? What effects did or will it have on their physical and mental health?

Tsuchimiya Kagura

[identity profile] jailbroke.insanejournal.com 2009-10-24 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Tsuchimiya Kagura
Canon: Ga-Rei (manga)
Reference picture and Wiki link: wiki link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ga-rei) and pic link (http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/reactive-san/Ga-Rei_v02_000_dust_cover.png)
Point in the time-line taken: The latest chapter (45)
Character History: For centuries, exorcists -- people with exceptional spiritual ability -- have stood between evil spirits, demonic entities and dark spiritual energy and the rest of the world that isn't even aware these things exist. Kagura is the last of a family of such exorcists and has been part of the government's "Supernatural Disaster Prevent Department" (under the Ministry of the Environment!) since she was in grade school, fighting spiritual crime by night and sleeping through class by day. However, it sucks to be an exorcist. Really, really sucks. For every one monster they drop, two more show up to take its place, and the casualties on their side climb higher every day.

When Kagura was young, her older sister figure, Yomi, was possessed and slaughtered the majority of the department, including Kagura's own father, and it was Kagura herself that was forced to put at stop to her with a nice traumatizing fatal stabbing. It was also then that she inherited the spiritual beast "Byakuei" from her dying father -- a monster sealed directly to the soul that continuously burns through the host's spiritual power until the day they die.

Two years later, she accidentally runs over the boy of her dreams with a motorbike, and after abusing government resources to find out what school he goes to, she transfers there (read: stalks him) and so begins a tale of spiritual shenanigans and the eventual destruction of the world.
Canon Personality:
Kagura is cheerful, kind, and energetic. She's a friendly person that, while completely ignorant of social norms most of the time, generally means well and wants to protect people -- particularly from things of a spiritual nature because, as exorcists, they are "the only people who can". She's a bit of a spaz when set off, and incredibly impulsive -- particularly with strange ideas such as using real ghosts to spice up the school's haunted house or building a snowman in the middle of a deep and heavy conversation for no particular reason. A touch random, in other words. She doesn't hesitate to put herself in the line of fire to protect people and the city she lives in, and at the end of the day, all she really wants is to be able to pass the time with the people she loves. Kensuke often calls her 'strong' because she is still such a bright, smiling person despite how hard things have been for her, but he's actually a little off-base.
Kagura simply represses, even to the extreme of amnesia, at one point. Even though she saw the corruption in the world for what it is, she forced herself to smile and be happy, because she firmly believed that she could never be a burden for others. She believed she had to follow her duty exactly and without question and could never allow emotion or injury to slow her down because it would be troublesome for the other exorcists. That's how she ended up killing Yomi. Only lately, she's got a newly-formed backbone, and has decided that she's tired of losing all the people she loves, and even if she's considered a traitor, and even if it's selfish, she's going to stand by her Important People right up until the very end.

Tsuchimiya Kagura

[identity profile] jailbroke.insanejournal.com 2009-10-24 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality:
Firstly, she'll... actually honestly be happy. Canon!Kagura is pushing aside lots of loss and death and knowledge of the corruption of her world's equivalent to the lifestream. No memories means no need to force herself.
Her determination 'not to burden others', while lessened in later canon, will be completely gone as a Blank. Pretty much all of it came from the way her father and the Department raised her, so minus those memories, she'll be a lot more open to others and expressing herself and willing to be supported by others.
Standing up for her beliefs and making decisions for herself is very much a new development -- as a Blank, she'll be more like she was when she was younger, backing down to others' expectations and definitely being a follower rather than anything even closely resembling a leader. Even if uncomfortable with a given course of action, if that's what her unit tells her to do, she will do it. She's a little hesitant, won't put her foot down, but once she has been assigned a course of action she does follow it with determination. In essence, Kagura can be a touch on the spineless side.
She'll be a lot more like a typical teenage girl as well. In canon she is accustomed to fighting all sorts of horrific monsters, enduring nasty injuries, and putting her life on the line regularly -- in Sabra, she won't be. She'll be afraid of the violent things and hesitant to hurt and be afraid herself of being hurt and dying, just like she was before she inherited Byakuei.
She'll continue to act on her strange impulses and silly ideas in Sabra. She's still caring about others, energetic, and friendly -- that's all just a part of who Kagura is. She's silly and spastic but also instinctively knows when the situation calls for seriousness and concern and acts accordingly.
Aaaand lastly, the Yomi Memory. That memory is possibly the most significant to Kagura's personality, as after murdering her older sister, she never forgave herself -- in fact it's safe to say she hated herself. She saw no value in her own life and was able to freely kill ghosts and monsters because once you've slaughtered your Most Important Person, everything else kind of pales in comparison. Losing this memory means she'll regain a sense of self worth -- she'll want to live, believe that it's okay to have nice things, etc. -- and will be very much hesitant and unwilling to harm others.
Side Note: Because I didn't know where exactly to put this. Kagura's soul is spiritually chained to the spiritual beast Byakuei. It's not a summon -- in its small puppy form it can actually come and go at will. However! Canon has shown that its power is regulated by Kagura herself, so if she is bracer'd, Byakuei will likewise be cut off from its godmod power and essentially be an invisible friend puppy that she will probably suspect is a hallucination and flail accordingly. If the mod team isn't cool with this, I'm comfortable with handwaving and saying the Judges completely sealed it to her soul or somesuch thing.
Also she eats five times the amount of a normal person's daily food intake.
Also also she's a hardcore food canary that's probably eaten stranger things in canon than could ever be found in Sabra. Most notably: delicious roasted cockroaches hom nom nom.

Writing Sample:

She woke slowly, staring up at the ceiling. A ceiling that was, strangely, unknown to her. In a bed that was unknown to her.

...As a her that was unknown to her.

Feeling the first stirrings of confusion and nervousness, she announced to the room: "...Um..." And of course, the room did not answer. Maybe... get up? Look around? Maybe there was a clue somewhere, or someone who knew her. But, as she shifted, her leg hit something on the bed that rolled off and hit the floor. Someone had left something on the bed with her. Something that she'd knocked off. Something that she'd probably just broke. Crap, she'd just broken someone's something.

Sitting bolt upright, she scrambled to the edge and peered over at whatever had fallen -- it was smooth? Brass? Rounded?

"Ah, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Are you alright?!" she cried, and then paused, realizing the absurdity of asking an inanimate object if it was 'alright'. Laughing nervously to herself, she carefully reached over and scooped it up to check it for damage. Whatever it was, it was solid and -- thankfully -- unharmed. But what was it? She curiously turned it over in her hands, touching the smooth cool surface, the little glass parts at either end, and then peered into the smaller end -- was there something inside?

What she saw was a girl looking straight back at her. Well, she sort of saw that. The image was a little smudged thanks to her fingerprint, so she had to wipe it on a corner of her clothing before trying a second time. It was a girl, looking back at her, calm and still and smiling. But it was a sad smile, and she felt a little pang of regret on this stranger's behalf. Then the girl spoke, and she nearly dropped the thing a second time.

"Even... even if they hate me for it... I do this willingly." she said. There didn't seem to be any more to it, so after a moment, she lowered the little brass thing and folded her hands over it. She wished for the best for this girl, whoever she was. She couldn't do anything to help, really, anything at all, but... well, maybe it would do?

A little uncertain, she pulled the brass thing up and hugged it to her chest. "I won't hate you for it," she said firmly, and then set it aside on the bed carefully. It would have to do, for now, at least.

Seta Soujirou

(Anonymous) 2009-10-26 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Seta Soujirou
Canon: Rurouni Kenshin
Reference picture and Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Soijiro_Seta.JPG // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rurouni_kenshin
Point in the time-line taken: After the Shingetsu Village fight/miniarc but before the second time he and Kenshin fight.

Character History: Soujirou was the illegitimate child of a rice business owner. When he was little his father dropped him off with his extended family. There he was beaten and pretty much used as slave labor. If he stepped out of line even a little bit he was punished severely. His form of sanctuary came when Shishio Makoto (who was on the run from the government who had set him on fire :(b ). Soujirou gave Shishio some bandages and food, and in return Shishio gave Soujirou a wakizashi and a phrase to live by, "The strong live and the weak die."

Soujirou slaughtered his family and he and Shishio headed off into the sunset.

From there Soujirou worked as Shishio's right hand man, performing tasks like carrying messages and assassinating important political figures. That sort of thing. Eventually Shishio's plans came almost to fruition, only to be disrupted by the ex-hitokiri Battousai, Kenshin.

Canon Personality: Soujirou is emotionally defunct. Because he was so badly abused as a child his entire personality shifted to eliminate all emotions except happiness. He doesn't feel sadness, guilt, regret, anger, etc. He's sealed all of those emotions away. Beyond that, Soujirou has also ingrained Shishio's teachings as the way the world works. He has a very black and white view of life, which, couple with his submissive personality makes him the perfect assassin underling.

After the second fight with Kenshin it's revealed that Soujirou never wanted to kill people and is carrying a huge burden of guilt. He doesn't deal with emotions that threaten his state of being, instead he represses them. He forgets them. Or he justifies them by measuring them against his rule for life. Soujirou makes things very simple.

Blank Personality: The base of Soujirou's personality is one that wants to survive and submit. He doesn't want to rock the boat, basically, and finds some comfort in following other people's orders -- these traits are ones he seems to have been born with. Unlike his canon personality, Soujirou will feel almost the full range of emotions. However, since his emotional issues became so fully ingrained into his Self he would still have some detachment to his emotions, memories or not.

His default is happy, and this won't change. He'll reach for a happy response before a sad one and so forth. Soujirou is going to be someone who looks for a reason for things. He likes his world to be neat and simple. In canon he finds this void filled by 'the strong live, the weak die' and so without that he'll be looking for a rule to judge the world by. He'll be a little lost and emotionally needy, looking for a stronger personality to lead him.

In canon Soujirou pushes things away because they don't work in his rule. He pushes them away until he snaps and has a psychotic break, basically. As a blank it will be hard to judge, but he will most likely follow whatever rule is easiest and most strongly presented to him.

Writing Sample:

He woke up.

It was an unfamiliar feeling, waking up and seeing the ceiling and feeling the bed beneath him. It shouldn't be, he felt in his gut, but it was nonetheless. He didn't move at first, instead he just lay there. It was a strange feeling, being comfortable in doing nothing and feeling oddly displaced. He didn't keep track of time — and what was would there have been to keep track of time? But eventually he rolled over and sat up.

Something hit the floor, he heard it but ignored it for the moment. He looked down at his hands, and then his feet. That was familiar enough, even though he couldn't remember why it was, even if the bed was not. He knew what he would look like, but when he tried to recall a name, how old, or a reason nothing came to him.

"Aah. . . oh! Right!" The thing. He bent down and picked it up, turning it over in one hand. It was metal. Bronze? Brass? Something. He turned it over in his hands and then examined both ends. He put it to one eye, cautiously and looked through it. He saw himself, a boy who was smiling. The boy waved and said: "Hahaha, this is how it is. I do this willingly."

He waited for something else, but that was it. He put down the thing; this is how it is. That sounded like acceptance, and that was okay with him too.

Sanada Yukimura

[identity profile] calamitous.insanejournal.com 2009-11-01 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Sanada Yukimura
Canon: Sengoku BASARA (anime)
Reference picture and Wiki link:
Reference picture (http://i43.tinypic.com/11tts2t.jpg)
Wiki link (http://sengokubasara.wikia.com/wiki/Sanada_Yukimura) - note that this is specifically about the game version of Yukimura, but his character is essentially the same. In the anime, the events are simply different.

Point in the time-line taken: The end of the anime, after defeating Oda Nobunaga.

Character History:
Yukimura is one of Takeda Shingen's closest retainers, a general of the Takeda army and a mighty warrior in his own right. Accompanied by the leader of his ninja squadron, there is almost nothing that Yukimura can't do, and if he can't do it, it doesn't stop him from trying. He is fiercely loyal to his lord Shingen, and will carry out his wishes, regardless of the cost. Their relationship is more or less abusive; they yell each others names, and punch each other, but Yukimura sees this as a test, and Shingen would have it no other way.

Until one day, the Takeda army was on route to meet Shingen's nemesis, Uesugi Kenshin, the Dragon of Echigo. They heard a tale of another army that intended to ambush them, and Shingen, being full of wisdom and forethought, sent Yukimura to head them off at the pass. Well, that was the day that Yukimura met his own nemesis, his own rival, a man who sent burning passion and vigor into his very soul. That man, was the Captain of Oshu, the One Eyed Dragon, Date Masamune. They fought there, sending a firestorm up into the heavens, and forcing both the Takeda and the Uesugi forces to retreat, to meet again another day. From that day on, Yukimura's only wish of his own was to fight Masamune again, and defeat him, once and for all.

But this is the Warring States of Japan, and nothing ever goes that easily. Oda Nobunaga, the Demon King, was on the rise, planning on conquering Japan for his very own. Men sought to create an alliance to defeat him, and Yukimura's lord was one of the men who agreed to this, and they created the base for this group that would use Date Masamune as their vanguard to topple Oda Nobunaga for once and all.

Yukimura was able to fight some true battles, to see fierce loyalty of other retainers to their own lords. This was the case of Honda Tadakatsu, the greatest warrior of the age. Tadakatsu was defeated, but with no honor or justice, destroyed in a massive explosion by the Demon King's wife, Nou. This bothered Yukimura very much, as his desire has always been for a true, fair fight, an honorable duel between men. The situation was made worse by Date Masamune being shot down by Akechi Mitsuhide, yet another of the Demon King's men. They took him and his retainer, Katakura Kojuuro, to the land of the Takeda, so that Masamune could recuperate. And so he did, but not before Yukimura learned lessons from Kojuuro that he really could not have learned elsewhere - lessons about what it truly meant to serve your lord and your land.

In a twist of fate, Lord Shingen is injured, gravely, forcing Yukimura into a depression, but it is Masamune, the lord of Oshuu who helps to snap him out of the funk, and together, they put aside their rivalry, however temporarily, to take the Demon King's head at last.

Date Masamune

[identity profile] wildgeese.insanejournal.com 2009-11-01 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Date Masamune
Canon: Sengoku Basara (anime)
Reference picture and Wiki link: picture (http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/494/sengoku0519.jpg) and wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sengoku_Basara_(anime))
Point in the time-line taken: After episode 12

Character History: Once upon a time in an era of warring feudal lords, the newest heir to the Date clan was born. Except then while still a wee little thing he caught smallpox and lost an eye. Whoops. Thanks to this and as well as the issues it created he became known as the One-Eyed Dragon. Too bad even being called a "dragon" wasn't apparently enough for his mother to see him as anything but a deformed cripple, though.

Nevertheless, the young dragon grew and matured despite adversity, taking over leadership of the clan and becoming a warlord in his own right. Between his missing eye and distinctive crescent-moon helmet, the One-Eyed Dragon began to make his name known throughout the land as a fierce and unpredictable young warrior competing to conquer Japan.

Canon Personality: Masamune is brash, headstrong, and hot-blooded. He's prone to getting riled up, charging in without thinking, and loves little more than a good, uninterrupted duel with a worthy opponent. Add to that his eccentric style, propensity to use random English phrases just because it sounds cool, and obvious pleasure at being the center of attention, and he may come across more like a delinquent gang leader than an esteemed daimyo. Of course, this is in part due to his many issues below the surface, that range from the deeply seated self-loathing instilled by his mother, to a need to simply prove himself, and a desire to live life in whatever way he damn well pleases regardless of custom.

Despite all this, though, he's fiercely loyal and dedicated, willing to put himself on the line for the sake of his men, and possessing a strong sense of a warrior's honor. The Date are the Date, and though they may be loathe to go along with anyone else's rules or terms, they take care of their own, with Masamune at the head to carve his own path in life and history.

Date Masamune

[identity profile] wildgeese.insanejournal.com 2009-11-01 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality: Considering that the vast majority of Masamune's personality and attitude in canon seems to be directly tied to his past history, as a blank he'll be rather different, to say the least.

To begin with, he won't have the key memory of being ill and having his eye gouged out as a young child, and all the subsequent trauma and issues that arose out of it. Overall, it means he'll be much more, well, mellow. Specifically, it means a number of things. Lacking the sense of self-loathing being ingrained into his mindset, he'll have some sense of self-confidence that doesn't go to the extreme of constantly needing to loudly prove himself best. He'll be more friendly and open and less prone to posturing and having a smartassed attitude. His impulsiveness will be tempered, and he'll be more thoughtful and willing to consider things before acting, and also be rather more impressionable, especially at first.

Of course, not everything will be completely different. Masamune's drive to prove himself and the force of the negative impact his experiences had on him didn't come from nowhere: on a basic level he's always wanted to try to do well by those he respects and loves, like anyone would. Similarly, his brash flamboyance comes in part from his basic personality, so while not near as eccentric or overblown, his interest in new and different things and some sense of pride will still be there. And not to mention his independent and tenacious attitude: even as a child he went and had his own infected eye gouged out, after all. Likewise his sense of loyalty and personal honor are more a fundamental part of him he retained despite his experiences, rather than because of them.

Altogether, as a blank Masamune will be much more level-headed and calmer, while still being, well, a bit of a typical nineteen year old as well.

Writing Sample: He opened his eye and stared at the ceiling. It proved to be rather plain and not much to look at, so he turned his head to look around. This revealed a room that was just as plain, and altogether unfamiliar.

Unfamiliar?

He sat up on the bed--equally unfamiliar, and when and how had he fallen asleep here?--and blinked, glancing quickly around again. None of it was familiar, but.... what was "familiar"? He tried to bring something to mind, to remember, and realized he couldn't. Not anything at all. He froze, the knowledge sinking in. At length he sighed, shaking his head a bit to clear it.

"Someone's got a bad idea of a joke," he said, speaking aloud without thinking. Even as he said it he wondered what the "joke" could possibly be, but shook his head again and moved to get up.

It was then that something caught his eye. Apparently the only thing of note in the room--other than himself, of course--it was a small, rounded object of some kind. He picked it up to have a closer look, and noticed that it seemed like one could see through one side. Without thinking he raised it his eye, misjudged slightly and hit the bridge of his nose, then adjusted and looked into it.

He could see a person in it. A young man of some sort, dressed in armor with a helmet featuring a large curved, ornament on the front of it and a total of six sheathed swords at his sides. The man's hair partially covered on side of his face, and underneath it there seemed to be something else there covering the eye. He had little enough time to take this all in, however, when the person moved and began to speak.

"Stay cool and win, piece of cake. I do this willingly."

He watched a moment longer, but that seemed to be the extent of it, so he put the device down again. He didn't know who that person was--how could he, when he didn't know who he was?--but he didn't seem like a bad guy. Had a good sense of style, at least, he thought, closing his eye briefly to recall the golden swoop of the front piece of the helmet. And what he said...

"'Piece of cake', huh... I like the sound of that."

Grinning a bit to himself, he made for the door. He'd seen what there was to see in the room, and just sitting around wouldn't get anything done; now the only choice was to go and face whatever came head on.

Sanada Yukimura

[identity profile] calamitous.insanejournal.com 2009-11-01 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Canon Personality:
To put it very simply, Yukimura is the very definition of hot blood. Once he gets started, you'll rarely stop him. He charges in, thinking little of the consequences of his actions, fervently acting out the orders of shingen Takeda, whom the Sanada clan serves. It's not until after, whether he succeeds or fails in his goal, that he realizes what may or may have occurred and feels any guilt at all, but the guilt is only for failing (or possibly failing) his Lord Shingen. He has the capability to see situations clearly however, but only if someone makes him stop to think. This person is occasionally his ninja, Sasuke, but generally Shingen, who sees so much potential in Yukimura, and wishes him to follow in his own footsteps long after Shingen has died. This is a plan that Yukimura has absolutely no problem with, except that he believes that if anyone can live forever, it's Shingen.

Yukimura is all about battle. Yukimura is all about ambition and honour. All battles ought to be fair and just, and if that's the case, there's no reason to be afraid of anything. His faith in his lord and his lord's abilities (and even his own, somewhat) make Yukimura practically blind to fear, and well, just about anything else. On the same note, that blindness tends to lead to many dumb moments. Yukimura can normally see the possibilities of things, but he's still not the brightest lightbulb, and often contradicts himself when he asks or explains things. He's also naive enough not to realize that his ninja, Sarutobi Sasuke, is blatantly lying to him about being engaged to a rival ninja, Kasuga. But then again, Sasuke is a little mean like that.

Once Yukimura sets his mind to something - once he decides to be fierce about it, then he won't ever give up. Case in point: Date Masamune. Shingen, thinking Masamune was planning to attack the opposing forces of the Uesugi, sent Yukimura up into the mountains to supposedly attack the Uesugi himself... however, he encountered Masamune instead, which is what Shingen had planned all along. It was a battle of destiny - Masamune's fierce burning soul set Yukimura aflame and he knew then that life would not be finished until he had another chance to fight Masamune.

I also would like to note that it seems more like Yukimura's fierce nature is being chained and utilized by Shingen. Shingen wants Yukimura to become so much more, but Yukimura is a creature of war, of battle. Somewhere, beneath the veneer that Shingen has tried to smooth over Yukimura, he is still a young tiger that burns fiercely, but who needs guidance to show him the proper way to do things. This is especialy shown when Shingen is injured and unable to do anything - Yukimura's structure, that he's known for so long is wiped out and he turns inward, afraid.

When Yukimura is not engaged in battle or respecting Lord Shingen through physical violence, he's really quite normal, if a little dumb. He's usually very serious when he speaks, as he's always convinced he's speaking the truth. He tries to stay quite formal with everyone, unless they insult him first. He's also very loud. Yukimura has no inner volume control, and usually has no sense to know when he should shut the hell up.

Blank Personality:
Yukimura's existence normally is very naive and simplistic. Really the main things that structure his life are the proprieties of being formal, and his loyalty to Lord Shingen. So, in fact, if I had to describe Yukimura with memories, it would be a loyal dog, still young and not entirely trained. And if I had to describe Yukimura with no memories... I would call him a a tiger, in need of a lot of guidance, especially since he knows nothing. Yukimura is all about feeling, sensation, and reaction normally, and it's just that a lot of that is filtered and forced into a strict set of guidelines called society that Shingen has helped to place on Yukimura. His emotions would be a lot more raw, his choices more instinctual, with no memories.

Concepts of honor or loyalty would be very minimal, since he would not recall being taught anything of the sort. He would be generally more naive on a whole, so his trusting nature would remain intact, which is similar even to how he acts with memories, given his interactions with his ninja, Sasuke. His naive nature leads me next to him being more unlearned and lacking the structure of a typical Japanese upbringing of the time, so formality and seriousness would certainly be less known and thus less important to him. He would probably be more likely to seek out fights from people who incite his fighting spirit as he would have less restraint, as this is more a part of his essence according to the series than something he has learned over time. Yukimura seems to be able to sense the ferocity of a warrior (whether real or imagined) and reacts on a far more instinctual level when it comes to picking his fights and his actions in battle.

As time passes, and he recalls more - especially about Shingen - he would come to slide back into the formality that he knows so well.

Writing Sample:
It was as if waking up after a long slumber, an endless dream that he didn't remember, and that chance of remembering something seemed just beyond reach. His eyes squeezed shut a little tighter before they blinked open-- and then quickly shut them again at the light in the room. For a moment, at least, before they flew open again, and he sat up, his eyes taking in the room. It was stranger than anything he'd seen before... Not that he recalled ever seeing anything before, which was odd, but easy to ignore given the situation.

Where was this place? Was there an escape? His eyes only noted a door in their search, eventually turning to look for something useful, something to use. That's when he saw something shining in the sheets covering his legs - rather, it caught his eye. Grabbing it without hesitation, he spun it in his hand, wondering exactly what such a thing could be. A tube of sorts, it fit in his hand rather comfortably, as if he was meant to hold it or something like it, he supposed. A moment later, and he realized he could look through the glass end-- and with a quick glance at the doorway, he placed the tube to his eye.

And saw nothing. He muttered something, more a vocalization than an actual word, and turned the device, trying again... and that's when he was treated to a picture. An oddly grainy picture of a man in red, with his hand to his chest. That man... his face was so determined, the blank couldn't help but think, so set on... something, as he gazed fiercely into the glass. The Blank couldn't help but speak, so impassioned by those eyes.

"Ohh--" But he was cut off when the man in red moved and spoke, as he let out the very same noise. "Ohhh--! Burn, my spirit! Watch over me, my Lord! I do this willingly!" It almost looked as if he was about to say more and was cut off by some unseen person.

And the Blank couldn't do much more than drop his tube, his hand clutching his chest in that same way, the same way as the man in the tube. He could feel that. A burning inside, wanting to be let out. "My... Lord? What is this feeling?"

Character Name: Kieran Trevarde
Canon: The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek
Reference picture and Wiki link:
Point in the time-line taken: End of canon
Character History: Kieran's life has been hard from the day he was born. Bastard son of a whore mother, he grew up alternately in a brothel and on the street, and committed his first murder at the age of eight. With more than a dozen murders to his name and a past that has included prostitution, opium addiction, and gang-running, he is a stereotypical outlaw hardass. Except for how he has a side of mysterious magical powers, called a Talent. Kieran's Talent is, unsurprisingly, killing people. He's a Jynx, able to wish others dead. Useful, sorta. Until a gunfight-gone-wrong lands him in a desert prison where his captors intend to experiment on him and all the other criminals with Talents. There he meets Ash Trine, they have a rather stereotypical seme-uke cowboy romance, ultimately escape from prison, kill the bad guy, and ride off into the sunset with enormous prices on their heads and an even stranger and sparklier backstory than they thought that includes Kieran being the incarnated avatar of a god of storms, death, and dreams.

Canon Personality: For the most part, Kieran acts the straight-up stereotypical hardened badass criminal. He's had to fight for every little thing he has, over and over again, and as a result he doesn't get attached to much--his only two great loves, even at the end of canon, are Ash and his gun. He's more than capable of being a cold-blooded killer, and has the rep, fighting skills, and tattoos to prove it. He's very proud of his heritage, which is a Native-American-equivalent in a Wild-West equivalent world. Kieran hates artifice in all forms, be it formal politeness, prejudice, or political sliminess, and is open about his past, his sexuality, and his temper to anyone brave enough to ask about it.

Unlike his story-counterpart, Kieran is rock-hard. He stands up to physical and mental torture and pushes through them with resilience that borders on ridiculous. He simply does not give in. He even fights back death itself, overpowering the god who tries to take over his body with sheer grit, determination, and general orneriness. He will do whatever it takes to fight for his own survival, from placing himself in mortifying positions to surviving torture to spitting blood in the face of ancient deities (literally).

Kieran Trevarde

[identity profile] dreamspinner.insanejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality: Even without his memories, Kieran's grit is at the very core of himself. He wants what he wants, and is willing to do anything to get it. There is nothing at all in canon that contradicts this--from the first times we see Kieran he's always after something, be it food, sex, protection, or revenge. In fact, it seems more like his life and memories enforce his personality rather than shape it. (Or at least it's very hard to say that anyone who is hard enough to commit cold-blooded murder at the age of eight isn't naturally overloaded in the badass department.)

He's gruff and abrasive, but once someone gets under his skin he'll protect them to the ends of the earth, even if he won't necessarily want to admit that's the case. He's a pretty textbook tsundere, and there's very little in his actual experience to teach him that it's safe to have that squishy center (by which I mean that everyone he loves dies), but he retains it despite trying to talk himself out of caring about people and things. It will only take one really good game to make him extremely wary of attachments, emotional or material, and it will really take some hard-core topping for him to give up and admit that he cares.

Given his background and long-ingrained fighting reflexes, he'll tend to be twitchy, and react to physical contact by startling, or possibly by throwing a punch. He also has a canon berserker-ish thingie but that only kicks in when he's in very big fighty danger, yay. Coupled with a quick temper, this may lead to some brawling. But he's good at scoping out a pecking order and finding his place in it. He'd just prefer that place be at the top.

With Ash, though, Kieran's personality softens up a bit. He's still gruff, but he is capable of great gentleness and has a very playful sense of humor. Without so many bad experiences and bad memories, this softer side is likely to make a larger appearance. There's great capacity for love and caring and protectiveness in Kieran, it's just that he needs time and urging to bring those things out of him. In canon only Ash gets to see the kinder, gentler side of Kieran, but in Sabra that potential widens out to more people, especially ones that he identifies as needing protection, pretty, or both.

It isn't necessarily that Kieran's uncultured, more that he doesn't particularly care for it. His canonical pleasures tend more toward food, sex, good weaponry, and opium. As few of those are available aplenty in Sabra, he has the potential to become rather invested in casual sex. That said, survival is paramount, and therefore he's not picky. Anything will do in a pinch. He's uneducated, but interested in learning. Canonically he has the impression that he's stupid despite being streetwise, able to read people, and full of survival skills, and whether that remains in Sabra depends greatly on how people initially react to him. He has problems with confinement, with not being free to roam, with being tied down to people and places, and all those will stay with him in Sabra. The caves will be very troubling to him, and he'll detest being constantly underground. This is not someone who will be content with peacefully plodding through his days. Kieran will want out, and will spend every waking moment watching and waiting for an opportunity to escape or rebel.

Basically, a blank Kieran will be much like the canonical Kieran, but less embittered and more playful and vulnerable, at least to those he cares about.

Uzuki Yashiro

Character Name: Uzuki Yashiro
Canon: The World Ends With You
Reference picture and Wiki link: picture (http://i36.tinypic.com/11qpy89.jpg), wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Ends_With_You)
Point in the time-line taken: end of game
Character History: Uzuki's a Reaper in the UG, a Harrier with ambition who was partnered with Kariya, happily competing against him, eating ramen, and generally trying to work toward a promotion. When another Game came up, she was excited to get a chance at winning more points and continuing to earn her way to a higher job. This Game included a Player named Neku, and he proved rather resilient, working his way through three games despite the best attempts of all Reapers, including Uzuki and Kariya, to erase him. She even, during the third week, took him on twice: once alone, and once in a tag-team with Kariya. Both times she lost, and Kariya convinced her that, because of how messed up Shibuya was getting, it wasn't worth it to immediately force her way into a promotion. She decided to spend a bit more time as a Harrier, without constantly focusing on getting promoted (although it was still of importance to her). Unfortunately, it was not long after that that the O-Pins, which all of the Reapers were carrying, activated. Uzuki and Kariya were brainwashed and, in this berserk state, attacked Neku a third time. After being defeated once more, they were thankfully not erased, and Uzuki later destroyed her O-Pin.
Canon Personality: Uzuki is a woman dedicated to her job. She works steadfastly in an attempt to be promoted, is always corteous of her higher-ups, and can come across as a bit of a brown-noser at times. She obeys her superiors enthusiastically and without question, and is always up for work that will help her get promoted. She is not content, in general, if she is not working hard; she has grown angry when she is denied it, and often berates her far lazier partner, Kariya.

Uzuki can act rather viciously sweet, especially when it's work-related. She enjoys her work quite a bit, it's just that it happens to involve erasing people. She can be all grins and giggles when her job is going smoothly. She enjoys playing the Reaper Games, and often makes bets with Kariya (usually over who's buying ramen that day). However, when things aren't going as she prefers, she quickly grows furious; Uzuki has a bit of a temper problem. While her outbursts can be intimidating, she's really one of the lowest-ranking Harriers, having only been on the job for two years.

Uzuki has trouble accepting help from others, especially those she considers inferior to her. The most one will get out of her is a begrudging thanks; this is, however, quite a show of respect from her.

Uzuki Yashiro

(Anonymous) 2009-11-07 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality: Ambition is at the core of Uzuki's personality; she'll keep it even without her memories. Her temper will remain as well, as it's almost as much a part of her as her ambitious nature. However, without knowing anyone and having no one she's certain she can trust when she arrives, she will be more suspicious than normal--Uzuki sees most people as competition before she sees them as people. At the same time, though, she will probably at least attempt to interact a bit--though often in a callous, begrudging way. She's not the type of person who enjoys being entirely alone in the world, although she hardly realizes this herself.

All of Uzuki's drive toward Reaping will be refocused on the games, and while she is often rash and headstrong she is nothing if not determined to have her way. She will work toward winning because this is what she does, and without memories she will be even more focused at something that seems like a definite goal. Uzuki likes definite goals, and hates being at the bottom of the ladder.

Writing Sample: It took her a bit longer than it should have to find the telescope, having spent a few confused moments simply examining the room she found herself in. There wasn't anything familiar about it, and so her attention soon turned to the strange device on the bed as she tried to quiet rapidly rising frustration. Nothing familiar about that, either, but she peered inside and saw a woman looking fairly serious and staring down the tube at her as if the woman knew she was watching.

"Calm down." Calm down? She was frustrated, confused, now some woman was telling her to calm down--but telling her like this woman knew her. "You have goals: focus." And then the woman giggled. "Try to have fun." Goals? What goals? And fun? Who was this woman to tell her what to do? But it made sense--she should find goals, immediately. Work toward them, because otherwise what would she do?

"I do this willingly." And then the little video ended.

Does what willingly? It occurred to her, then, that the woman might be telling her all this, acting like she knew who she was addressing, because they were the same person. Working from that, this situation was something she had decided on.

"Well..."

Well. It was still really annoying. With a little growl she decided she might as well go out and see what else there was to wherever this was.

Point in the time-line taken: Chapter 6/movie 6
Character History:
Mikiya is your average guy living a normal life in your average city in Japan. He falls in love with Ryougi Shiki and drove Shiki into wanting to kill him because he cared and accepted her. He didn't die but Shiki fell into a coma due to events following the attempted murder. Losing his motivation to further his studies, Mikiya dropped out of college to go in search of this puppet maker and magus named Aozaki Touko. He managed to find her office in an abandoned building, despite the barrier set up to keep it hidden from the outside world. Touko recognized his talent for investigative work and hired him.

Two years later, Shiki woke up and she ended up working with Touko as well. So life is good now. He's Touko's personal assistant and detective when they have jobs of the paranormal variety. He doesn't have to encounter danger in the front lines because that's Shiki's forte. And he gets to talk to and take care of Shiki on a daily basis. Who cares if his life is in danger every once in a while.

Canon Personality:
Mikiya thinks for others, with an almost complete disregard for himself. He is aware of his limits but he also tends to underestimate the gravity of the situation. He's a nice and polite guy who just wants to help. He says hypocritical things (like telling people to continue their studies despite being a drop-out himself) but it is always for what he thinks is for the person's own good. He accepts people for who they are, is patient and genuinely cares, regardless of what they have done and how scared shitless he was by it. He enjoys the little things and is easily satisfied.

He is oblivious to feelings and concerns that others may have for him if it's not stated. He just doesn't rank himself very high on his list of priorities.

Blank Personality:
Mikiya won't act much different from he was before. Most of his personality isn't affected by any major memory. His concern for others over himself and his maturity was evident in him even as a child. He is just a natural nice guy. His ability to accept things as it is and file them aside if there are no readily available answers can be seen in canon. Despite traumatic experiences, he still falls back on this core personality.

His life is built on an innate urge to help and support others. If anything, it could be the extreme experiences in Sabra that ends up changing him. As it is, he is basically the same as before, minus memories of moral grounds and societal norms for him to stand on.

Writing Sample:
He blinked at the blurry ceiling and started to grope around the bed. He found a pair of black-rimmed glasses next to his pillow and automatically put it on. The ceiling came into focus but he gradually realized his mind wasn't. In fact, there was nothing to focus on.

He sat up to take a better look of the room he's in. It was unfamiliar. He soon noticed the two items lying next to him on the bed. One that looked like it would fit on his arm and a telescope-like object. He selected the bronze telescope and looked into it.

The sudden image and voice surprised him. There was a grainy image of a young man in there. The image was smiling pleasantly back at him. "I'm doing this for -----. I do this willingly." He continued looking, wondering if there was more. The recording repeated with the same word censored.

He put the telescope aside to remove his glasses and examine it. Then he checked out the recording again. It looked to be the same pair. He looked down at himself, then patted his hair, tugged at it, looked at it, and tried to compare everything to the other person. The color of his clothes was obviously different but the glasses and hair looked/felt the same. He wondered if this was him and if so why couldn't he remember recording it. The message felt important though, so he held on to it.

He got up to examine the rest of the room, hoping maybe that he'll find more clues to his presence here.

Watanuki Kimihiro

[identity profile] in_the_chair.insanejournal.com 2009-11-08 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name:  Watanuki Kimihiro

Canon:  xxxHoLic

Reference picture and Wiki link: Summary for the series, picture!Point in the time-line taken:  Just after the end of the first series, before the timeskip that preceeds xxxHoLic Rou.

Character History: Watanuki was originally just a teenaged boy with a very simple problem: spirits think he’s delicious. So delicious, in fact, that they didn’t give him so much as a moment’s peace until he finally sought out the services of Ichihara Yuuko, a witch capable of granting wishes. In exchange, he became her slave personal servant. Although officially his duties were only to take care of the shop (cook, cleaning, etc.), he quickly found himself embroiled in all sorts of supernatural situations. Yuuko’s customers were never normal, for starters. They started with a group of crazy otherworld travelers (aka the Tsubasa folks) and kind of got crazier from there. Along the way, he made a number of strong friends in both worlds… and began to realize that maybe his life didn’t suck that bad after all. Because in the end, that was the real purpose behind both the wish and the terms of his service: to make him stop hating himself and give him a life outside of being that-guy-who-always-gets-snacked on.

Which is good, because that’s when things really started to get CLAMP-tastic. It turns out that Watanuki wasn’t supposed to exist at all, full stop. He was the time-distortion replacement-clone of the “real” Syaoran, who himself turned out to be the son of the the clone who’d been made from him. In less paradox-y terms: neither of them were supposed to exist, and yet both of them did. Watanuki spent a good portion of his series alternately trying to make himself disappear (subconsciously) and trying not to (once people started beating sense into him). When shit went down at the end of their respective canon, Watanuki chose to stay and take over the shop after Yuuko while Syaoran went off adventuring. Whether this was a good decision or not remains to be seen.

Canon Personality: Canon Watanuki had a lot of change going on. Since Holic was essentially all about his character development from a bitchy flaily teenager to the inheritor of Yuuko's shop, there was a lot to cover. He started off very angry and reactive to everything. If Yuuko drank too much? He yelled. If she asked for something ridiculous to eat? More yelling. He even fended off his (eventual) best friend with a kick the first time they met. But despite all the noise he made, reactive was really the key part of his early-canon personality; he had barely any initiative whatsoever. He was half-blind to anything that goes on outside of himself, especially when it came to people caring about him. Honestly, he didn’t know what to do about it. And even if he had, he was the sort of person to let things float on by without taking any action that would have helped him out.

Watanuki Kimihiro

[identity profile] in_the_chair.insanejournal.com 2009-11-08 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem was that Watanuki had no self-preservation whatsoever. He couldn't consciously remember that he was a crazy CLAMP clone, but his body did; this was, in fact, the cause of spirits finding him tasty. He wanted to stop existing so badly that he was on the verge of disappearing himself for the majority of the series. He deeply believed that someone like him didn't deserve happiness (however he might flail about inconvenience) and reacted to the initial intrusions into his life by being a big damn martyr. He couldn't stand to let anyone else give up something for him, no matter how much he might have needed it. But little by little, Yuuko drew people (and spirits) into his life. His destructive self-sacrifice slowly turned into the resolve to do whatever he could, as long as it was within his power to do so. Most importantly, he began to value himself -- even if it was only because he didn't want to make his friends sad by destroying himself. Yuuko’s end-canon disappearance threw a bit of a wrench into this, removing most of the last bits of flail and causing him to make a potentially self-destructive choice, but it also matured him into becoming a compassionate inheritor to the shop — which is good, because he seriously didn’t have the power necessary to grant people’s wishes directly.

Overall, canon Watanuki was someone who shifted a lot between being bitchy and flaily … and being mature and compassionate. Sometimes both at the same time. He overreacted a lot, and definitely screwed up a lot re: keeping himself safe and realizing that people actually did care about him, but he was the sort of person who can balance that, given the proper influences. He was the sort of person who does best when he has a lot of strong connections around him—especially during the parts of his life when he didn’t want to make any new connections at all.

Blank Personality: Blank!Watanuki will resemble his early-canon persona pretty closely, at first. He’ll be bitchy and angry and FRUSTRATED with any mild inconvenience, especially the ones that have to do with his teammates. He’ll be curious but probably not friendly, at first. It may take a while for his team force him to realize that he’s not stuck here by himself. There will be a lot of complaining from him at first. And while he doesn’t get hungry due to his reality issues, there are a million other things to get pissed at and generally moan about. He’ll also be terribly reactive, both in the exclamation pointing!! sense of the word as well as the “doesn’t have a spine” sense. There will be a lot of room for the game in general to impress on him. Where he ends up on the continuum of his canon personality will depend very heavily on the memories he gets, how strong his teammate-bonds are, and what sorts of games he plays in during his first month or so. Hopefully, he’ll follow something vaguely similar to his canon development: bitchy and spineless until people beat sense into him, and then slowly coming into the deeper, more compassionate parts of his persona. … but he could also get so wrapped up in self-sacrifice that he gives himself a critical existence failure. (Needless to say, this would be a Bad End. Just not a likely one, we hope.)

Writing Sample:

The Blank knew he hated his life before he even got out of bed.

He had awakened to something scratchy and uncomfortable looped around his neck. At first, he’d thought he was being strangled — by some horrible and extremely scratchy but surely dangerous monster!! — and had gotten doubly pissed once he’d realized that his blankets weren’t even alive, much less malevolent. And the room? Too cold without the (vicious, monstery) blankets, but way too hot underneath them. He kicked them off in the end and sat on his bed, trying to think of a word to properly vent his frustrations.

“Ridiculous — no, that’s not bad enough. Stupid?”

He rubbed his eyes to clear the blur that surrounded his vision like a fog … then rubbed again. He rubbed until his eyes hurt, but still the room refused to focus. Was it even supposed to? He couldn’t tell. As far as he knew, he’d always been in this blurry, brown room with nothing in it other than the blankets and the bed on which he currently sat. Or — no, there was something else in here. The Blank fumbled his way over to a small endtable. A shiny metal blob rested there, glinting and shiny even in his crappy vision. Grabbing it and bringing it close enough to squint at revealed it to be cylindrical, with some sort of hole on one end. “This is just going to put my eye out, isn’t it,” he muttered darkly. “Stupid isn’t strong enough either.

In the end, however, there was nothing else to do. Kicking the bed only resulted in stubbed toes; trying to lie back down again got him tangled in his sheets. He got the vague, tickling sensation that he might even have tried all of this multiple times, like some unconscious circular something broken only by the strange metal cylinder. This couldn’t be coincidence; everything was conspiring against him to make him look into that damn cylinder.

Inside, a young man stood patiently. He had short black hair and a strange-looking coat with long sleeves, which he had draped over his back. Something wiry rested on the boy’s nose, catching and reflecting the light — metal and glass, maybe? The entire scene was jarringly unfamiliar. Even the boy’s expression was strange: something strong and sad all at once. I chose to wait for her,” he said at last, clutching at one of his blue-white coatsleeves. “I do this willingly.”

Just like that, the image was gone. The Blank blinked. Another look only got him more of the same, as did the second and the third. What was that even supposed to mean? Was that him? Some other person? “This is pointless!” he said, slamming the cylinder back down with more force than he should have. “Do you hear me?” The walls echoed around him. “I’m going back to bed until things make more sense!”

He did just that, but clarity refused to come. If anything, the image he’d seen grew fuzzy, and then blurred out altogether. The blankets were scratchy and strangly. The ceiling was rough and empty. There was nothing in this room except for him.

The Blank knew he hated his life before he even got out of bed.

Character Name: Sawada Tsunayoshi
Canon: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Reference picture (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e233/CosplayRefs/Reborn/Tsuna.jpg) and Wiki link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reborn!)
Point in the time-line taken: Right before the Choice Game with Byakuran.
Character History:
Tsunayoshi was just your average--well, below average kid who knew his place in the world. The name "No-Good Tsuna" was one that he dealt with on an every-day basis. He only attended school for the sole reason that it was the place where he could watch his crush from afar. This all changed, however, when his mother gets an odd add in the paper and suddenly a baby enters the picture with a "Ciaossu~". The worst thing is that there had been no way of knowing that this mere baby was a mafia hitman.

Reborn begins Tsuna's training to become a mafia boss right off the bat--having traced down the kid as the most legitimate heir to the title of the Tenth Vongola. Naturally there would be problems to getting Tsuna whipped into shape, not only in terms of being No-Good, but also securing the dedication of members of the family. Throw-in a tsundere bombing nutjob, an easy-going baseball freak, and a few other special personalities, and you have yourself the Vongola family who follow the Tenth Vongola boss. Tsuna, however, continues to deny he's the boss despite all the trials they go through, battling first with themselves then against the Varia, and then finally--a trip to the future, where things had gone to hell in a handbasket and the Vongola are on the run.

So it's up to Tsuna to bring the Vongola up to their true potential, bringing out the abilities that have not been seen since the Vongola Primo. Still, Tsuna has to wonder how he got into this mafia business in the first place and how he would be able to change anything when the Tsuna of Ten Years Later is considered dead.

Canon Personality:
Tsuna, as been noted, is used to being considered "No Good". He has long-since grown used to being considered this and actually just began to tolerate and forget about trying to make any changes about it. In fact, he completely was against Reborn even trying to change things up for him because it ruined his nice safe bubble named "normalcy". However, within Tsuna is someone who has the strength to endure trials--he's just never saw reason to do so. It's not until Reborn gives him the shoves--or bullets to the head--to get started that he starts finding that part of himself that wants to be more than No-Good Tsuna, that wants the friends and strength that he can offer to those friends.

Though he continually says that he's not the Vongola boss and he does continuously let others take the reins in terms of who's in charge, Tsuna will not turn away from responsibility. He learned at the beginning, since he started with Reborn, that continuing to run away wouldn't solve anything. Instead he will bear the troubles that he faces with the support of his friends and allies. That doesn't mean he doesn't think that having troubles shoved off onto him is exactly fair, either. In fact, he objects a lot when someone has to look at him and go, "Well, you're the one in charge."

Overall though, Tsuna is a kind-hearted kid who will whine and complain but when it comes down to it, he pulls through. Because as far as he's gotten with his friends--with the Vongola and mafia--there is no going back to being No-Good Tsuna. Tsuna remains dense a lot of the times, however, often attempting to avoid making decisions. In fact, some of the time, he's more than happy to turn over control of the situation. All the same, he will do whatever necessary to make sure his family comes out of their conflicts in one piece, willing to sacrifice himself to do so.

Blank Personality:
As a blank, a lot of that build-up of confidence will be lost. Tsuna really is not very smart or very strong or very... anything, really. And he will be painfully aware of this during games and will hate himself for it. No-Good Tsuna would be the closest way to describe him. However, rather than the resigned attitude Tsuna once had in regards to that, it will be more of an expected sort of thing. "This is how thing are," would be the way Tsuna will see his blunders and mistakes. He will fault no one but himself for being unable to do much and will regret not being able to do more. But as said, it was due to Reborn's influence that Tsuna got past that sort of thing in his life and without those memories, he will revert to similar state.

While this is the case, Tsuna does have a strong heart within him. And though memories might have been lost, that strength of heart that was cultivated and grew during those trials in his memories will remain. Tsuna will be stubbornly resilient despite his failings and will try hard to make up for what he lacks. He will likely actively try to make others happy and possibly be a nuisance when he fails to do so, since... No-Good Tsuna can't do anything right. He'll still have a tendency to try to avoid being in charge of a situation, mostly because he'll honestly think he is incapable of handling the situation. There is also, of course, always a chance that memories could hurt this strength of heart and cause it to wither and for Tsuna to revert back to the true No-Good Tsuna.

Writing Sample:
The Blank wasn't sure if he wanted to get out of bed. Sure, he could make another attempt, but then he'd have to deal with the fact that the sheets somehow got tangled around his legs and something heavy kept knocking against his head when he moved. He sighed instead, staring at the ceiling for a moment before moving his eyes to the wall, reading the words there.

He sat himself after another moment, reaching up behind him to grab at the object that seemed to enjoy tormenting him. It was round and tube-like. The Blank blinked at it for a moment before bringing it to his eye when a flicker of that message played again.

"I, uh... I--" stammered the boy in the message for a moment, pausing only to shake his head before looking ahead. There was a troubled but attempting to be reassuring smile on his face as he managed to get out, "They're there for you like you're there for them."

"I do this willingly..."

It doesn't sound very willingly, the Blank thought to himself with another frown as he lowered the telescope. He sighed again, aggrieved since he couldn't remember why he'd be left a message like that in the first place. Ah, but there were sounds coming from behind the door--maybe someone would have an answer. That thought cheering the Blank up slightly, he quickly moved for the door--

"Oof!"

--and completely forgot about the sheets that clutched at his legs.

Writing Sample: He had been dreaming, but the minute his eyes opened the dream was gone as though it had never been. Something about that raised his ire, and he let out a plosive breath of air before realizing that he had no idea whatsoever what may have annoyed him so. As his eyes adjusted to the dimness, he realized that he couldn't remember anything. Not the dream, not why not remembering it annoyed him, not where he was or--and this was alarming enough to make him bolt upright--who he was. As if by instinct, he reached to his side, and his hand closed around something solid and cold. Something about it was just wrong, and another annoyed breath gusted out of him when he considered just how damn stupid it was for something to feel wrong when he couldn't even remember right.

"Get a grip--" he murmured, and then stumbled as he realized he had nothing to call himself. The sound had been low, smooth. He tried it out again, louder. "Get a grip."

It wasn't reassuring. But it did serve to remind him that his fingers were closed around a metal object, which was warming in his palm. He studied it, curious. There was nothing particularly interesting about the larger end, but when he held the smaller one to his eye, the image of a person appeared.

He was tall, bony, like there hadn't been a good meal in his recent past, and his clothes were battered and dirty. The only color on him at all was a blood-red bandana, and all the rest was black. It made him difficult to make out entirely in the grainy picture. But his face was clear enough, all thin pointed features and weirdly green eyes. Something about the eyes chilled him a little, even in the tiny, blurred image.

"This is for--" The words began soft, almost gentle, then cut off abruptly, as though he'd been somehow silenced. The man looked uncomfortable, shifted his shoulders, and a hand reached up to grasp hold of something around his throat--a brassy pendant of some sort. When he spoke again his voice had changed, was solid and sure underneath the quiet drawl. "For us. So we have a future." His lip curled, and he tossed back long hair. "I do this willingly." And then the image flickered out.

"I do this willingly." He tested the words in his mouth, found that they had the same stresses, if none of the steel. "So we have a future." He took a moment to consider.

"What in the fuck was he talking about?"

Point in the time-line taken: In the Sun
Character History: The Junkyard was a place where Tribes battled each other for the right to be the ones to enter Nirvana. Part of the Embryon Tribe, Cielo's life was permanently altered one day when his tribe and the Vanguards found a mysterious egg-shaped object on the border of their territories. After a short battle over the object, it began to glow, and then beams of light shot out and struck everyone on the battlefield - and, as a matter of fact, everyone in the entire Junkyard. Everyone struck by the light obtained Atma, the power of demons. With that power, the Embryon vanquished the Vanguards and captured a mysterious black haired girl who had been inside the egg. Eventually, they discovered that their new powers came with a terrible price - they would be forced to devour their enemies in order to live. Moreover, at some point every person undogoes a another change; prior to the light, everyone's eyes were grey, and they acted only in accordance with logic and the rules laid down by the Karma Temple. After the light, under extreme emotional stress, each character changes; their eye colour changes to match their hair, and their personality changes greatly. Cielo, after failing to protect the base and the black haired girl from their enemies, changes into an upbeat Jamaican dude! Including the accent.

Lots of fights happen, and eventually what's left of Embryon goes to Nirvana. The trouble being that Nirvana? Is no Nirvana. Nirvana is simply the real world, a world where the sun has turned black and humans who venture under it turn to stone; where hunters from the Karma Society attempt to capture the few remaining pure humans for food; where the Tribe is seperated and forced to find their way back together, all the while searching for Sera, the black haired girl, whom they've all come to love. Cielo is captured by the Lokapala, the organization formed by the remaining pure humans. He's eventually freed and travels to Karma City with his Tribe in search of Sera. They find her, but at great cost - and the toll isn't done yet, once they have her. The world in imminent danger of being destroyed, they conclude that the only hope is to get Sera to where she can commune with God - whatever the cost.

Canon Personality:

Cielo is upbeat and cheerful, but while much of it is genuine, some of that cheerfulness is actually a front, hiding his insecurities about his strength and his ability to do what his tribe needs him to; he's a second-stringer and he knows it, and while he's thoroughly devoted to his comrades, he can't help feelings of inadequacy; it was his own failures and being berated for those failures that caused him to awaken from his AI state, which shows how deeply they affect him. But his personal negativity doesn't show except in very brief unguarded moments! He focuses on the positive, cheerleads his tribe from the back row, and when he gets his chances to shine, he does his best not to disappoint He's not extremely smart, but he's more foolish than stupid. He lacks a great deal of understanding of even basic things beyond fighting, because that's all there was in the Junkyard - no plants, no animals, not even any children. While he knows about these things . . . he doesn't know how he does. Loyalty is very important to Cielo; the one thing that angers him more than anything is people who forsake their comrades.
