Apps

Please read these guidelines carefully, as failure to complete the application properly may result in a need for revision or outright rejection. Be sure that you have also read the Rules and General Info pages, the latter of which contains information necessary to write your RP sample.

Apping New Characters

In general, all answers besides the first two should be answered in full sentences with a reasonable grasp of the English language. Run it through a spell-checker; make your Grammar Nazi friend take a look at it. Nothing here needs to be a college thesis, but a little proof-reading can go a long way. We do not demand that your paragraph breaks come at an editorially ideal point, but we do demand that they exist.

We are also looking for insight over length. A longer application is not always better! Take the space you need to give a well-thought-out answer, but walls and walls of text will definitely not speed up the approval process.

Contact/Personal Info
A comment separate from your app with your name, preferred journal, and email. Making it a separate comment lets us know who you are, but lets us keep your email address screened.

Canon (and version, if applicable)
Should be pretty straightforward!

Reference Picture and Wiki link (again, if applicable)
Again, pretty straightforward!

Point in the time-line taken Whether the character comes from the end of the series or a point partway through. For characters being apped from ongoing canons, we ask that you pick a definite spot to start from, though you are welcome to add memories past that point when your canon progresses.

Character History
A brief summary of your characters history, just so the mods have at least a little background to go on. This section generally need be no longer than 300 words, and if it takes up more than an entire comment you have done it wrong.

Motivation
Basically, why this character would willingly agree to come to Sabra. What you write in here isn't set in stone, especially for ongoing canons, and doesn't have to be that SPECIFIC WISH, but show us you're thinking about it at the least!

Canon Personality
Can be a little longer than the history, if necessary.

Blank Personality
The most important section! Please explain what personality traits you believe your character will lose and retain upon arriving in Sabra La Tau and why. Analysis of why your characters do what they do, and how their memories shape those actions is necessary to give an acceptable answer to this section; simply listing how your character will act is not enough.

Some characters may act in an extremely similar fashion to their canon selves and some may act radically different. However, in either case, we want you to explain why. We want the players to chose for themselves what their character would be like sans memories, but unsupportable (or simply unsupported) answers will be rejected.

Writing Sample
Your character receives the recording that all Blanks receive upon awakening. Describe both the recording and your character's reaction in a ~300 word third-person sample. Yes, it may seem strange to have a third-person sample required in a first-person RP, however, this will give you a chance to show off your grasp of both the canon and Blank incarnation of your character. Don't worry about your purple prose or deadly allergy to adverbs; what we are looking for here is characterization and an interesting spin. Please also keep in mind what can and can't be in that video.

As a general rule of thumb, we tend to prefer apps that describe the Blanks' reaction to seeing themselves in the message over the ones that concentrate on the Blanks' reaction to the room or their own sense of confusion. Introspection is key! How would your Blank's reaction be different from other Blanks?

Reapping Dropped Characters

This app form is for those of you who have dropped a character and wish to pick that character back up. It is NOT for a player who wishes to app a character that someone else has dropped; those characters will use the normal app form and start over as a fresh Blank.

Character Name:

State before they left:
Give a brief description of the character's emotions/state of mind up to the point where they stopped being an active character.

IC day they were dropped:
Gives a good idea of how much IC time they've been away.

Destination:
Where were they, and, if they were with a judge, what was their time away like? For instance, if you went off to frolic with the Foreman, you spent time working just like he said! You were super happy and well fed. You feel like you had the springtime of your life but you really can't remember any of the details! Why? Because you were a giant cave ant at the time! You lucky dog. While it's not strictly necessary to go into much detail about your life as an ant, it makes Foreman conversations in the future more fun.

Reaction to their time away:
This section will vary depending on where your character ended up. Also, if you wish to reset your character and have them join a different unit, this is the place to let us know!
- If they were in the pillar, how will it affect your character to have been completely immobilized, in a semi-conscious state, for the aforementioned amount of time?
- If they were with the Foreman, they spent their time away as a GIANT ANT. What effects did their time away have on them? Mood improvement? Strength and constitution up? Just put on muscle weight? Regained health? Zen with the world?
- If they were with their unit's patron or otherwise away, how was it? What effects did or will it have on their physical and mental health?

Red XIII / Nanaki 2/2

[identity profile] yzak.insanejournal.com 2010-07-08 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality:
Red is not going to change too dramatically, as he's a character who doesn't go through any outstanding 180s in the canon itself. He's going to be naturally curious about many things, and eager to learn. He'll be a little more timid, especially considering he's very different from the majority of the human types in the game, so his beast/humanlike side which he does struggle with in canon will probably come up a little more at the start. Not to mention, part of his great pride lies within his memories of his family, so his added timidness will stem from that feeling of being alone and not fitting in with the others/not having somebody similar to him to look up to. Since in canon he's gone through feelings of fear that make him panic, he might even be a little more scared at the beginning, since he's still very young.

Since he's grown and his memories of growing up alongside humans will initially be gone, his reactions will start off as a bit more beast-instinctive - ie growling and threatening to attack as a defense mechanism if he's in any sort of danger. He's not going to have a hard time just speaking to others (and he will be polite, as that's just in his nature), but because of his beast/humanlike split, he's going to take a while to start to really trust anybody. This can speed up and change depending on what memories he gets back, though, considering his "grandfather" is a human and one of the people Red respects the most.

Writing Sample:

"Where ... am I?"

Those were the first words out of the blank's mouth when he opened his eye, his surroundings not the least bit familiar. But his reaction was an instinctive one, and as he woke up completely, he realized there were more startling problems than where he was. The most startling being who he was. His head jerked around frantically, looking for-- what was he looking for? Could anything in this room possibly help him with this sudden, crippling emptiness he felt inside?

I can't remember-- I can't remember anything! I need to stay calm, if I don't figure out what this is, it won't help--!

He quickly moved off of the bed (being careful not to knock over the trinket that sat beside him, he didn't know what that was), staring down at his legs and paws through his eye (so he wasn't human). Two of his legs were adorned with matching bangles, so the vambrace on his right leg stood out that much more. He spun around, glancing back to his tail - was that fire supposed to be there? Was it there for a reason, just like the various tattoos and marking on his body?

The bronze trinket on the bed caught his eye again, and he slowly moved back over to inspect it. A tube ... could it have been some sort of weapon? Slowly, carefully, nervously, he lowered his head and peered into the end of it, and his ears perked in surprise. The form of a figure just like him ... or was it him? The markings, the tail ... they looked just like his. The figure looked a little hesitant for a moment, before bravely raising his head without so much as a flinch. "I ... I do this willingly!"

Do this willingly? Do what willingly? The blank had no idea, but if that was really him ... he said it so firmly, so determinedly, it made him curious as to what he was talking about. Maybe if he figured that out, he'd figure out why he couldn't remember anything, too - better yet, maybe he'd actually start to remember things. Turning away from the bed, he moved to the exit, if it was possible, he'd search for the answers to the seemingly endless questions that were now running through his mind.

Cara Mason

[identity profile] infernoal.insanejournal.com 2010-07-11 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Cara Mason
Canon: Legend of the Seeker
Reference picture and Wiki link: Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Seeker) and Reference pic (http://www.enworld.org/forum/attachments/media-lounge-off-topic/42190d1260039802-legend-seeker-3-broken-season-2-2009-tabrett-bethell-cara-legend-seeker.jpg)
Point in the time-line taken: Past "Princess"
Character History:
Once upon a time, Cara was a sweet innocent girl. Unfortunately for her, that didn't last long for the Mord'Sith came for her. The Mord'Sith, an elite women's guard for the ruler of D'Hara, Darken Rahl. And her training began, with torture, more torture, mind-games and death. Until finally, Cara killed her own father and completed the cycle of becoming a Mord'Sith; cold, vicious and one of the most powerful forces to have ever existed.

Cara was different. When she met Richard and spent time with him, she realized that Darken Rahl didn't care for her sisters or her. So she helped Richard kill him and tried to take the Mord'Sith on a different path. But through the dark magic of Darken Rahl and the Keeper, the Mord'Sith betrayed Cara, cut off her braid and left her to die - an ignoble death, where she was finally found by Richard once again. Richard Cypher, now known as Richard Rahl, the heir to D'Hara had the claim to the throne and for that, he had Cara's complete loyalty. And as she continued to travel on his quest, the reappearance of feelings and understand slowly came back to her as well.

Canon Personality:

Make not mistake. Cara is a Mord'Sith and she's proud of it. She can be incredibly blunt and sarcastic to what she considers "useless sentimentality", often to the point of dismissing it completely. To Cara, pain and fear is the way to win in the world and pleasure was the only other thing you can mix with it. But her time with Richard and his party has made her realize that it's not as useless as she first believed.

Hesitant about her emotions, often to the point of disguising under a veneer of scorn, Cara is terrified to feel, terrified of what it does to her confidence. However, she feels that the changes happening to her are still important and deals with them slowly.

Cara Mason

[identity profile] infernoal.insanejournal.com 2010-07-11 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality:

While Cara won't be the Mord'Sith without her memories, she definitely won't regress to the kind person she was as a child. Instead, Cara would be hesitant, quiet and stoic -- keeping to herself and still possessing the ability to fight and defend herself when necessary with a hint of sadism. Still, despite that shell to protect herself, Cara will be able to open up more. And she will still have her wonderful brand of sarcasm and caustic attitude towards death and killing. Memories or not, she's a Mord'Sith. And she will still use whatever she can to her own advantage and her continued survival. As her memories return to her, she will develop a loyalty streak towards whomever she is attached to her as well as better control over her emotions. She will also have an active curiosity towards everyone else's actions and behavioural patterns.

Writing Sample:

There was no pain.

She woke up, hair in her eyes. She brushed them off curiously and rose from her bed. She touched her face, her eyes, ... everything was in place. There was a holster on her hip, but no sword or object in its place. She was a fighter or she must have been one... She scrunched up her face. Nothing. Name? Nothing. Past? Nothing. She ran her hands through her hair in frustration. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Just peachy. She wanted to punch something. ... She probably could punch something easily, if she really was a fighter. Her lips curved slightly. Punching. Something she might have to look into later.

The room they had put her in was fairly dull, save for the fact that it was painted in colours of red. Cara was tempted to go back to sleep until something important decided to happen when she picked up a faint voice. She scrambled out of the bed, looking around frantically.

"--I do this for him, I do this willingly--"

There! On the ground. She snatched up the object, a pale silvery tube that seemed to have a picture of someone -- a woman with blonde hair and green eyes -- saying "I do this for him, I do this willingly." The woman in question seemed to repeat these words with a devotion she did not understand. Who was "him?" What was this woman doing? She peered at the picture with intense concentration. The woman only said the same thing over and over again, her face blank and unwavering. Finally, she tossed the tube back on the ground without a second thought.

Whatever this woman was doing, whoever she was doing it for, had nothing to do with her. And whatever she would do? It's because she felt like it.

Alyx Vance 1/2

Character Name: Alyx Vance
Canon: Half-Life 2 and its episodes
Reference picture and Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alyx_Vance and image! (http://i26.tinypic.com/hu4rc8.jpg)
Point in the time-line taken: post episode 2
Character History: Sometime in the not-too-distant future, a group of theoretical physicists in the Black Mesa research facility decided to mess with an unknown substance given to them by a mysterious benefactor. Their actions opened hundreds of portals to a hostile alien world across Earth. At the time of this resonance cascade, Alyx was at the epicenter of the event in the research facility, and was saved from the disaster by her father under some mysterious circumstances. While this happened, Earth was defeated by the alien menace called in 7 hours.

So Alyx Vance grew up in a world controlled by alien dictators (called the Combine) who used humans as either hideous puppet monsters or despairing workers. She was raised very closely to the ongoing struggle against our alien overlords because of her father’s involvement in the movement, and as she grew older she would become one of the key members of the resistance. It was through this resistance effort that she happened to save a Doctor Gordon Freeman: Humanity’s Last Hopetm. After a series of escapes and teleportation mishaps, they teamed up to fight the big human traitor and free City 17 from the aliens! And they won!

Unfortunately, this involved destabilizing a very important core, and they narrowly escaped an explosion through very mysterious circumstances. And while the human collaborator had been defeated, the Combine were still around, and they were pissed. Alyx (and the rest of the resistance) could never be satisfied with a world half saved, so a new quest started involving the theft of some serious alien secrets that had to be delivered to another pocket of the resistance. And they did that. Whatever’s next is unfortunately a mystery, because Valve is really good at delaying their games.

Canon Personality: Considering her environment, Alyx has turned out remarkably well. She’s good natured and friendly with almost everyone she encounters, although she can get bratty towards people who condescend to her or are otherwise unpleasant. That last bit can also mean she's stubborn at times when she really shouldn’t be. She has a lot of easy confidence about her on account of being a capable mechanicientist (and a good defender against aliens!) surrounded by some seriously impressive peers. Overall, despite the dystopian surroundings, she can keep up a strong face without it really being a mask. This is mostly out of a conviction that it’s better to keep your head up when you have a choice, although a lot of it is admittedly due to that same stubbornness.

She does acknowledge that there are some situations that can’t be dealt with this way: it’s important to note here that Alyx is the primary NPC counterpart to a silent protagonist, which means she has to carry a lot of the human element of the game. Because of this she mirrors the player’s reactions to many of the atrocities committed by the Combine, and so reveals a sensitivity to suffering that isn't so easily shrugged off.

Her worst quality is probably that she is also unfortunately prone to making some really bad jokes. I mean, awful. It’s endearing.

[identity profile] waxwings.insanejournal.com 2010-07-14 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality: Not a whole lot is going to change. She’s going from one bad situation to another, and most of her reactions and coping mechanisms will transfer quite neatly. However, she’ll grow more frustrated with the judges than normal as she remembers her experience with resistance, especially with her memories of successful resistance against impossible odds. As a result, she’ll resist any learned helplessness as long as she can. Depending on the results of resistance and especially how her attempts affect others, “as long as she can” may vary wildly.

Besides that, she’ll be approaching a lot of the environment with a mechanic’s mind: interested in all of the little details that make Sabra function, how exactly they differ from what she’s used to, and how she can adapt her previous knowledge in this environment, even how she can use what she learns here to affect her home. With that in mind, the complete newness that will come with being a blank will be much more interesting than frustrating at the beginning.

Writing Sample: It was obvious something was wrong. In fact, that was about the only obvious thing about the whole affair. She’d analyzed the situation to the best of her ability multiple times, but it turns out the best of her ability didn’t mean much when she was (apparently) an amnesiac. Each time the woman looked around the room she could identify the door, bed, torch, trunk easily, but whenever she got around to examining herself, there was nothing more than a bit of fuzz in the back of her head. And she was pretty damn sure that’s not how it’s supposed to go.

“Alright, stranger,” she mumbled to herself, “let’s solve this.” She carefully got out of the bed and began a thorough search of the room, checking in crannies and nooks and whatever other small spaces she might not have seen. “Maybe there’s an ID or a wallet or something else hidden somewhere in all this rock…” (She didn’t actually know what either of those things would look like or even what they were, but they seemed like the sort of thing that’d be helpful here.) Finally, she found a small metal thing knocked under the bed in a place that was just past comfortable to reach. After a little retrival effort, she turned it over in her hands, finally settling with the small hole pointing up almost expectantly. She wasn’t all that sure about putting strange things up to her eye, but well, at this point she’d take what she could get. “You’re kinda funny looking, wallet, but I really hope you’ve got some answers for me…”

She wasn’t sure what she was expecting to find, but it certainly wasn’t an image of a remarkably familiar woman. She was absently counting something or other off on her fingers. After a second, she looked up at the Blank, all determination and seriousness. “This is way bigger than you.” A grin. “Suck it up, champ! I do this willingly.”

She had to admit it was helpful, but not perhaps in the way she was hoping for. She still knew very little about the situation or herself, but now had a pleasantly ominous suggestion of what was still to come. But it wasn’t nearly enough to sate her curiosity. As the message looped over and over in her hand (she was pretty sure it was mocking her at this point) she considered her options. She seemed like a nice enough person. Annoyingly vague, maybe, but nice enough. She probably had at LEAST a friendly acquaintance somewhere around that could explain the series of circumstances that led to all this confusion. Then they could skip right to the part where this was just a funny story. Or, as she had to admit was more likely more likely, they could explain the situation she was in and help her prepare for whatever was coming.

After a last cursory glance around the well-examined room, she set out towards the door. Even if she couldn’t find anyone with useful information, at least she’d have some different things to fiddle with.

Ragna the Bloodedge 1/2

Reference picture and Wiki link: Reference (http://s164.photobucket.com/albums/u20/Orsted/?action=view&current=Ragnawallpaper.jpg) and Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlazBlue)
Point in the time-line taken: Right after the True Ending of Blazblue: Calamity Trigger

Character History:

Life hasn't been easy for poor Ragna the Bloodedge. Granted. life hasn't been easy for a lot of people after the magical apocalypse one hundred years ago, an unpleasant affair involving a monster called the Black Beast wiping out half of humanity before its own demise at the hands of Six Heroes. During this catastrophe, humanity was taught by these Heroes to use the Ars Magus, the setting's term for sorcery. To regulate the use and education of the Ars Magus, an organization known as the NOL (Novus Orbis Librarium) was formed, eventually consolidating its power as a totalitarian world government.

But things have been especially hard on Ragna. He was raised as an orphan in a small church, along with his younger siblings, Jin and Saya. Extremely protective of the two, he had to deal with both Saya's poor health, and Jin's dependence and possessiveness toward him. When Ragna was a teenager, tragedy struck. An evil being named Terumi forced Jin to assist him in burning down the church and abducting Saya. Ragna tried to intervene, but failed in stopping them, losing an arm in the process. In that moment, he lost everything he had held dear, but his life was spared. A new arm replaced Ragna's severed arm; it was the Azure Grimoire, a legendary magical artifact formed from condensed “seithr,” or magical energy. The Azure bestowed upon him superhuman physical abilities, a mastery of the Ars Magus, and the ability to drain the life-force of others.

After the incident, he was mentored in swordsmanship by Jubei, one of the Six Heroes that defeated the Black Beast. Newly armed with skill, resolve, and absurdly powerful magical abilities, Ragna has waged a one-man war with the NOL, earning him the highest bounty in the history of humanity, and the nickname “the Grim Reaper.” Ragna's motives are mysterious, but appear to be related to the mysterious Cauldrons found at the heart of every NOL headquarters. Something in the Cauldrons is inextricably linked to Ragna's past and his disappeared sister Saya. Thus he heads to the city of Kagutsuchi, in search of the Cauldron within it.

What Ragna does not know, is that when he finds the Cauldron, something will go wrong. Due to the Azure, the Cauldron will transform Ragna into the Black Beast. Time will be reset to one hundred years ago where Ragna will cause the apocalypse against his will. This cycle has repeated countless times, each slightly different, but all leading to the same tragedy. For the purpose of this app, Ragna will be taken from the final repetition, in which the cycle is broken and he learns of Terumi's involvement in his past.

Canon Personality:

Ragna isn't the life of most parties. He's coarse, bitter, stand-offish, and disdainful of anybody telling him what to do. Ragna despises being lied to or manipulated, and especially hates being toyed with. He dislikes anyone interfering in his business, and in turn would prefer to stay out of the business of others. He is very slow to trust others, with Jubei being possibly the only exception. He has a great deal of anger and a rather short fuse, but he generally only uses violence in self-defense. On the other hand, in the case of the NOL, or those he truly despises, Ragna is merciless.

Ragna the Bloodedge 2/2

[identity profile] lavosadvocate.insanejournal.com 2010-07-15 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ever since the church incident, Ragna has had a deep sense of powerlessness. He was unable to protect everything that he loved, and nearly died. Much of Ragna's thorny personality came as a result of this trauma. It filled him with anger at the world and self-loathing toward himself for his weakness. Ragna still finds the past difficult to think about, much less confront. In spite of being the world's most infamous terrorist, deep down Ragna isn't a bad guy. He still cares very much about his family, and basically wants to do the right thing if possible. He'll never admit it, but he's even a bit of a softy at times, inclined to lend help to the suffering, the well-intentioned, and hungry cats. Ragna is fiercely protective of anything that he does care about, and will react very violently toward anything that attempts to harm them. The case with Jin is complicated. Although he still cares for Jin, he is uncertain of how exactly he was involved the disaster years ago. If he were to have his memories restored, and met Jin, its likely he'd react with some hostility.

Blank Personality:

Without his memories, Ragna would actually be a pretty likable guy. The brief scenes in the game that depict him when he was younger show a mellow, even lazy, young man with few worries. The church incident filled him with anger, and made him unable to trust others. Without that trauma, he'd be less reserved about being kind toward others and making friends. Ragna would lose his fear of powerlessness, and be less contemptuous of authority. Put simply, his hardened outer shell would no longer exist. However, he'd also be less determined and courageous.

Ragna would keep his inclination toward protecting others, though it would not be nearly as fierce. He'd still be determined to right wrongs, though not quite as vehemently, and be more honest about his motivations. He'd also remain somewhat headstrong and stubborn, as he was depicted as occasionally showing some annoyance toward the nuns running the church when they asked him to perform chores. With his personality, he'd likely fall into something of a big brother role toward younger members of his team.

When memories start to come back, he may start to grow more bitter and distant, more reluctant to trust others. His complex about powerlessness would return, and he may start growing resentful of Sabra itself for constraining him. And if he sees Jin, needless to say he will want some answers.

Writing Sample:

The person on the other side of the looking glass glowered at him with eyes that didn't match. One green and one red, under a shock of white hair. He could tell that the image was far away, that it was some sort of message, but he could also tell that the stranger was directing his scowl directly at him.

“Hey, asshole,” the white-haired man growled. “Keep yourself alive out there.” Advice? But why? Who was this? “I do this willingly.”

The Blank's eye left the glass, and he shook his head. What the hell was he even doing? He couldn't understand anything. He tried to probe his mind for something; memories, people, some idea of why he woke up in a room he'd never seen before. But there was nothing. Not even himself. It's as if he had come into existence just moments ago, in this room.

But something was wrong. His right arm was warm, tingling slightly. It wasn't pain; there something else, something he couldn't identify. He held the arm in front of his face. It responded normally, it could move fine- why did something feel odd about it? He shuddered, feeling unreal, as if he weren't entirely there, and that the room and his right arm were the only things that existed, and he was just an illusion-

No. The Blank squeezed his eyes shut. He had to think clearly and figure out what was going on. Who was he? The only clue was that device and the image of the person inside it. Was that him? The idea that he had gone here willingly comforted him slightly. He was pretty sure he wouldn't betray himself.

There was no use moping about it. The Blank flung himself off the bed, stretched. He certainly intended to keep himself alive, and he was pretty sure that feeling “empty inside” could be cured by something to eat.

Lelouch Lamperouge (vi Britannia) 1/2

[identity profile] zeromemories.insanejournal.com 2010-07-18 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Lelouch Lamperouge (vi Britannia)
Canon: Code Geass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Geass)
Reference picture and Wiki link: Wiki link & picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lelouch_Lamperouge)
Point in the time-line taken: Post-death, after the end of R2.

Character History: Exiled from his homeland of Britannia after the assassination of his mother, Lelouch (11th prince of the Britannian Empire) grew up in war-torn "Area 11" (Japan under Britannian rule) under the assumed name of Lelouch Lamperouge. With his blinded and crippled sister Nunnally by his side, Lelouch begins to identify with the Elevens fighting for their country, developing an epic hate-on for his father (the Emperor) and all of Britannia. When a chance terrorism-related encounter lands Lelouch face-to-face with the mysterious C.C., Lelouch is granted the power of Geass, allowing him to force others to obey one order from him without question. Using his Geass and his own innate abilities as a leader and strategist, Lelouch dons the mask of "Zero" and takes control of the Black Knights, a Japanese rebel army, and begins to crusade against Britannia.

Although his fight eventually brings him "victory" as he comes to terms with his past and succeeds his father as the 99th Emperor of Britannia—and eventually, of the entire world—Lelouch ends up sacrificing his relationships and many of those he loves, either on purpose or accidentally. He is forced to face down the gods themselves and come to terms with the very meaning of existence, war, ambition, and free will. In the end Lelouch creates a plan to gather all the hatred in the world in one place—himself—and purge it all with his own assassination.

Canon Personality: Lelouch is a mess of contradictions all crammed in the noodley body of a severely fucked up royal that really never got enough hugs as a child. Because of his trauma!childhood, Lelouch doesn’t trust anybody, and constantly puts up fronts. In school, he is distant, friendly, and polite; as Zero, he is arrogant, ruthless, and maniacal. He is blindingly intelligent and a strategic genius, to the point where everyday life becomes achingly boring for him unless he has something to do or some task to focus on. He’s a complete failure at any physical task and awkwardness at dealing with normal personal relationships is pretty much epic. His true strength is all internal, and not just his crazy intellect. Lelouch has a lot of mental fortitude and determination, especially when he’s working for a cause, and even moreso when that cause has something to do with his loved ones.

Lelouch Lamperouge (vi Britannia) 2/2

[identity profile] zeromemories.insanejournal.com 2010-07-18 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality: The beginning of Code Geass: R2 actually provides us with a canon example of Lelouch with his important memories wiped, including his lineage, his sister, and being Zero, which are more or less the summation of Lelouch’s driving motivations. That said, Lelouch without his memories is a sweet, awkward boy that absolutely dotes on his family and enjoys nothing more than cooking, cleaning, and interior decorating (though this is kind of true of Lelouch normally—it’s just that world domination is unfortunately time-consuming). He is polite and fairly quiet, friendly, but a little distant. He’s easily bullied into things and while he’s still incredibly intelligent, without anywhere to channel it he can be a little restless and aimless. He’s a lover, not a fighter: he’ll likely hate most games, and be the one left in the cave to meticulously iron clothing rather than go hunting.

Writing Sample:

The first thing to do, he decided, was to think about this rationally, and to just stay calm.

He had no idea why he was here, or where here was, or, really, who he was, either. He had a vague sense that this should feel stranger than it did. But the voice in the telescope had told him to keep his head about things—he would undoubtedly, absolutely find a way out of this, and it was completely necessary. He had sounded so self-assured, the type of person that was more than used to being obeyed under any circumstances.

(The voice had sounded familiar, too, but for the life of him, he couldn’t imagine how. He couldn’t remember anything—how could anything be familiar? It didn’t make sense.)

He walked around the room a few times, carefully examining everything, memorizing little details as if doing so would start to replace the emptiness inside his head. Pillow. Blankets. He smoothed down the sheets and carefully tucked the blankets in. He wasn’t sure why. It just looked better that way, and he felt strangely pleased.

When he was done, and the room hadn’t changed any, he spent another few minutes with the telescope. “I do this willingly,” the voice had said.

He still wasn’t sure what “this” was, but now that he was sufficiently prepared, perhaps it was time to find out.

Yoi-te 1/3

Character Name: Yoi-te

Canon: Nabari no Ou

Reference picture and Wiki link: Yoi-te (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nabari_no_Ou_characters#Grey_Wolves) is listed under the Grey Wolves. Image (http://myucon.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/yoite.jpg).

Point in the time-line taken: Post-death (well, moment of death)

Character History: The start of Yoi-te's life wasn't very positive: his mother died in childbirth and, born as an intersex individual, he wasn't very welcome in his family. Which is to say, he was primarily confined to the basement for most of his life and suffered from severe identity issues, unable to form a sense of self that matched how his family treated him. When he turned 14, his family decided to kill him; although he was slashed in the throat he escaped and was found by the leader of a secret ninja clan. Wanting as much as he could to have his existence erased, he vanished completely from the "front" or non-ninja world and took on a forbidden ninja technique, the "Kira" technique. This technique allowed him to harm things and kill people by pointing at them and shooting his life energy into them. However, Kira was forbidden because of the cost on the user -- it cracked open their ability to contain their own life energy, leading to a fast and horrible death.

Two years later, he was on the verge of that death when he got a glimmer of hope -- not to be saved, but, rather than dying, to be erased. The greatest secret technique, one capable of rewriting reality freely, had surfaced in the body of a young teenage boy, Miharu. Yoi-te made contact with Miharu, manipulating him by threatening his friends, and got Miharu's promise to erase him once Miharu was able to control this phenomenal technique.

The last thing either of them expected was to come to love each other, but they did, eventually making enemies of the most powerful and dangerous ninjas of the world and turning their backs on their own clans as they attempted to run away together. Yoi-te fought their enemies to try to protect Miharu; in the end, he was unable to withhold the symptoms of Kira degeneration during the strain of that final battle and died in Miharu's arms right before Miharu could erase him, his desire ultimately thwarted. (Miharu did erase everyone's memories of Yoi-te after the fact, however.)

Yoi-te 2/3

[identity profile] harukami.insanejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Canon Personality: Yoi-te is terrified of receiving affection because he feels he has nothing to give in return -- even if he were to overcome the emotional outcome of his family's abuse and becoming an assassin, and were able to return someone's affection, he's doomed to die. Originally, he'd desired to be erased so that a creature like him would leave no trace; by the end, he wants to be erased because he has received affection -- Miharu's (and others') -- and doesn't want to think of Miharu being sad without him. After all, if he is erased, Miharu can be happy again.

I mention this in such detail because it's the core of Yoi-te's motivations. He is, essentially, both inherently broken and inherently kind. He rarely shows this in canon, because he wants to push attachments away from himself, but he cares deeply about his teammates. He'll do more or less anything for the person who's taken care of him since he was taken into the ninja clan. But he's very broken in both little and big ways. Mentions of how pretty he is results in him freaking out and attempting to kill the person who says it. He wears clothes feet to neck all the time, refusing to let even Miharu see him without several layers on. And, obviously, he wants to rewrite reality to undo his own existence from birth and erase the amount of suffering that he feels he leaves as a stain around himself. So yeah, issues. This combination of emotional damage and a kind personality makes him, ultimately, an extremely lonely person who's desperate for love, but forced to believe that love will ultimately only hurt himself and other people more.

Those main motivations aside, Yoi-te is soft-spoken when he speaks at all instead of ellipsing awkwardly at someone, and courteous; even if he's threatening someone's life at the time he shows up, he'll greet people with a polite "good evening". He's socially awkward and often does antisocial things like standing in corners to eat, sitting and hugging his knees and ignoring the goings on, etc. But much of this awkwardness also is an attempt to cover up the fact his senses are failing and making it difficult for him to keep track of situations. He's got a deadpan sense of humor; he's not a joker by nature, but he's willing to play the straight man to those around him who are. Overall, he's just a little offbeat.

Blank Personality: Upfront, I want to address the fact that I'd like to keep the effects Kira degeneration have had on his body to a point (even though his Kira would be sealed) -- large black smoky stains across his body, shortness of breath and organ damage, and his senses occasionally cutting out causing moments where he can't hear, difficulty tasting food, etc. I'd like to keep this not at the extent it was at during the moment of death but nevertheless impacting him. I recognize this is essentially the "terminal illness" concern raised in the Rules and would be happy to discuss out any fallout from this -- perhaps we could rule that the bracers slow the deterioration to the point that his body has a few years left instead of a few months? But it's a key detail I'd like to play with as a condition of his body. It shouldn't hold his team back TOO significantly as he's still, canonically, one of the strongest members of his team even while suffering from it.

The reason I bring this up here is that I think that being unwell would have a large effect on his personality.

(con't)

Yoi-te 3/3

[identity profile] harukami.insanejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality (con't): As a Blank, Yoi-te is going to be much less emotionally damaged (and much less body-shy). He'll be open to making friends, interacting with others, and bonding. The kind side of his nature is likely to shine among his unit, as he won't feel an inherent need to push them away (until certain memories surface, at any rate). He will remain soft-spoken and polite; there's signs that he was even more so before the majority of damage was done to his psyche at age 14. His ability for coldness will be less focused though still present -- I believe it to be part of his inherent nature as well, and it will mostly show up in his dealings with other teams, where he will be cautious and quiet.

With Kira degeneration still affecting his body, as well as other factors such as his ambiguous genitalia, Yoi-te may quickly become aware that his body is different from those of his teammates and not 'normal', and won't know why. He'll be distressed by this -- in moments where it's apparent, rather than going on the attack as he does in canon, as a blank he'll behave more like he does with Miharu when this happens: he cries often around Miharu when these things come up. When it's a background awareness, as opposed to things happening to draw his attention to it, it is likely going to contribute toward quietness and slight withdrawal. However, he is likely to be more open about the affects of Kira as a whole with his unit and hide his suffering less than he does in canon.

Writing Sample:
When he wakes, the first thing he realizes is that he knows nothing; he wakes with a feeling of blankness settled on him, a lack of recognition of where he is, who he is, what he is. He sits up a little, blankets falling away and finds himself fully dressed.

Slowly, uncertainly, he peels away his gloves to stare at his hands, as if they would give him some clue to his identity. And they do -- or could, rather, if he had any idea what it meant; his fingertips are inky black, spreading in strange blotchy patches over his palms. He tugs back a sleeve and sees more of the same there, though less solid and less complete.

It means nothing to him.

As he shifts something metal clinks and falls off the bed. He leans over, chest aching strangely as he does so, and picks it up. It's a tube, and after a moment's consideration he peers in the end.

A stranger peers back, strangely familiar, pretty and hollow-eyed and wan. The stranger's mouth is moving; it takes him a few moment's concentration to make out words. --At this point, I have no options remaining. ...I do this willingly.

Not, he thinks, the most promising beginning, no options remaining, and he's not particularly clear on what this is. But, he thinks slowly as he considers the tube, if someone would be doing this to get options, maybe that's good. Maybe this place represents some kind of hope. Maybe.

It's enough to make him hopeful, anyway, to swing his legs out of bed and propel him to the door. "Good afternoon," he calls, and waits to see who answers.

Lucy 1/2

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Lucy Jaggat (note: I'd prefer it if her surname wasn't used in the character listings or anything because it's a pretty big spoiler for the first part of the season)
Canon: Being Human
Reference picture and Wiki link: Last on the list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Being_Human_characters#Series_2). Picture is here (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/violetsquirrel/CFUD/beinghuman/BH2x02_0117.jpg).
Point in the time-line taken: After her death

Character History:
Lucy Jaggat was a brilliant young medical researcher with the world at her fingertips, until she was in a car accident that left her with a near-death religious experience. Then she became the kind of researcher who writes books on intelligent design. She became the laughing stock of the profession until she met a man called Kemp. Kemp praised her work and showed her that ghosts, vampires and werewolves were very real and something needed to be done about them.

Joining Kemp's organisation, Lucy immediately started working on the problem of how to prevent a werewolf from transforming at the full moon. Her first experiment was a partial success- the werewolf didn't transform, but he did die as his body rebelled against the artificial pressure preventing him from transforming.

A few werewolves later, they discovered something else that piqued their interest- a vampire, werewolf and ghost all living together in one apartment. Lucy was naturally curious about vampires, so she placed herself in the path of the one they'd found, Mitchell, with the intention of gaining his trust and learning more about vampires for herself. She ended up finding herself falling for him and believing that he wasn't intrinsically evil and he could change, in complete conflict with her belief that he was intrinsically evil. In the end pressure from Kemp and her previous belief system won out long enough for her to order the killing of all the vampires in the area, including him. But Mitchell survived to confront her for her betrayal, and she was lucky to escape with her life.

Her faith in Kemp's system broken by Mitchell's words, and with nowhere else to go, she once again sought out Mitchell and his friends. Somewhat calmer that he was before, Mitchell convinced the others not to kill her on sight. Unfortunately for her Kemp had also found them and deciding that Lucy had betrayed him, he stabbed her through the heart.

Canon Personality:
Lucy is bright, confident and has a wicked sense of humour. She doesn't suffer fools, and can't resist a good bit of sarcasm even at the worst moment. As a doctor she sees a lot of death, and she tends to deal with it- along with any other uncomfortable situations- with her wit. She's compassionate and just wants to help people (which is probably what led to her studying medicine) and she's very much prepared to get her hands dirty to do so. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, after all. This means she can appear to be callous about toying with the lives of others, but she never loses sight of the fact that it's all meant to be for the greater good.

She's a scientist at heart and this is very much reflected in her personality. She's curious and always looking for answers when something doesn't make sense to her or she knows there are holes in her knowledge. She trusts her own experiences- she might have a deep and abiding faith in God, but it's one that comes out of her own personal near-death religious experience. This is her greatest source of conflict- she has absolute faith, but her experiences with Mitchell tell her he isn't what her faith tells her he is. She is forced to resolve this by picking the one that can explain both sets of experiences- that Mitchell is only charming because he was made in the image of the devil and any feelings she has for him are due to her own weakness of faith. Once she makes this choice she's prepared to defend it to the death until something happens to shake its foundations. Stress only causes her to cling more tightly to what she's decided to believe.

Lucy 2/2

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Blank Personality:
The main difference will be that Lucy won't have her faith, and won't understand the depth of her faith in her memories until she has the memory of her accident. The only reason she believes is because of her own lived experience, so without that she'll rely on the experiences she actually has. She won't have the scientific training that she has with her memories, but the foundations of science are simply curiosity and a practical nature, and those are integral parts of her character that she'd keep, along with her sense of humour.

She'll be more naive than she would be since she hasn't lived through killing people for the sake of research, and more concerned with individual lives, although she'd still have the potential to be convinced into doing terrible things in pursuit of the greater good. One of Lucy's main motivations is helping people and that won't change. She'll still try to improve the general quality of life for the people around her through exploring and experimenting with the environment around her. She will also be less confident and sure of herself since she's not in a position to know what's going on, but she's likely to develop strong opinions on what's going on very quickly so that she has something to cling to.

The core of Lucy's personality would remain the same even without her memories, but she'd be more concerned with individuals and wouldn't have the faith that shapes most of her decisions.

Writing Sample:
Now this was definitely odd. She'd woken up to find herself in a plain room with a single door and only a metal tube to give her a clue as to where or who she was. Despite her lack of memories, she was quite sure this wasn't how waking up was supposed to work. Not that she knew how it was meant to work, but surely this couldn't be it. In any case, she was certain she'd figure it out, and that began with figuring out the tube.

It didn't take her long to discover the tube's trick. A grainy image of a woman looked back at her. The woman took a deep breath as if to steady herself, and then spoke calmly. "You have to find yourself and what you believe in. I do this willingly." Well, that was no help at all. Of course she had to find out who she was, she didn't need someone else to tell her that. And what did it matter to her what this person did or didn't do willingly?

"This doesn't make any sense." she muttered to herself, and then her eyes widened in shock. Her voice... it couldn't be. But of course there was an easy way to find out. She took a deep breath and spoke the words she'd just heard spoken to her. "You have to find yourself and what you believe in. I do this willingly."

She was right. She brought the tube to her eye and watched it again, then a third time, this time repeating the words at the same time as she heard them. She had to be sure after all. And now she was certain: her voice was the same voice as the woman's. Then it stood to reason that this woman was, in fact, her. She was watching a message from herself, to herself. Which made even less sense, really. Why would she have given herself such useless advice? Knowing that she had apparently consented to whatever had just happened to her didn't make her feel any better either. But sitting here wasn't going to get her much further than she'd already gotten.

Time to explore the world outside the door.

Character Name: Uchiha Itachi
Canon: Naruto (manga)
Reference picture and Wiki link: image, wiki link
Point in the time-line taken: just after his death
Character History:
Naruto is set in a world populated by ninjas who reside in hidden villages scattered across the continent, one per country. One of the Five Great Villages is Konohagakure, and one of the Konohagakure's most prominent—and indeed, one of its founding—clans is the Uchiha.

Itachi was born the genius heir of the Uchiha. From a young age, he was determined to maintain peace for his village, rose rapidly through the ninja ranks and was inducted into the super-elite ANBU at the age of eleven. Unfortunately, this was when tensions between his clan and the village came to a head, and by the age of thirteen Itachi become a double agent, informing the village of his clan's intent to conduct a coup. Ultimately, this led him being ordered to massacre every one of his living relatives.

In carrying out his orders, the only exception Itachi made was his younger brother, Sasuke. He spared him, mentally tortured him, manipulated him into hating Itachi as a cold-blooded murderer forever, and then left his beloved home to spy on his immortal traitor of an ancestor, Madara, and join Madara's gang of international criminals. For eight years, he patiently bided his time and fought off terminal illness, waiting for the day to come when Sasuke would kill him and redeem their family name. Illness and Sasuke both caught up to him eventually, and Itachi's final act before dying was to ensure that Sasuke would be safe from Madara's interference.

Itachi 2/?

[personal profile] ivoryandhorn (from insanejournal.com) 2010-07-25 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Canon Personality:
At his core, Itachi is someone who really wants peace. If he could bring about world peace in exchange for suffering for all eternity, he would probably do it (he also has something of a thing for self-martyrdom). However, his desire for peace is filtered through the fact that he grew up in a society where he was expected to and encouraged to take up a life of violence. What this adds up to is that Itachi has a rather ends-justify-the-means approach to ensuring the peace and stability of his home.

In that vein, Itachi tends to take the long view; he's a strategist and a planner, and has been known to put in action plans that would take years to bear fruit. He's always looking to the consequences of his actions, and when possible how to make those consequences work for him. He can be ruthless in his execution of his plans and is not above manipulating and hurting people he cares about deeply in the course of his plans. He's well aware of that aspect of himself, but it's not something he dwells on particular—he'll make explanations, but not excuses.

As a genius, Itachi also has a fair amount of self-assuredness to himself, and the confidence that comes from being able to say "I can defeat you" to most people of his acquaintance and having the power and skill to back it up. He's not arrogant, however; he's more than capable of complimenting opponents who turn out to be more powerful than he expected and dealing with them accordingly. He can be incredibly driven and determined, and has a lot of willpower when it comes to accomplishing his goals. Though his personal attachments are few, once someone gets close to him, he will hold on tight to the connection.

Blank Personality:
No memories means that Itachi will be missing a lot of baggage related to his clan, his village, relations between his clan and village, and basically all of the things that made him who he is today. However, he'll still retain a good deal of his adult personality. He's spent the past eight years of his life passing as an emotionless sociopath who killed his entire clan for no apparent provocation, and while I'll be dialing back the coldness, part of that is still going to stick with him as an instinctual reaction to other people even without his memories. He'll be initially reserved around other people, a person of few words, but without any memories he'll open up to others much more easily. He'll be more openly kind and caring, open to interaction and cooperation with others. He'll probably be a good deal happier, too, smile much more easily.

Itachi will keep the analytical, long view aspect of his personality, though he'll be much, much more reluctant to manipulate people, especially if it involves harming them in any way. All that ruthlessness and ends-justifies-the-means will also be gone, though they will probably resurface as he regains his memories. Most of his self-assuredness will stick with him, but he'll acquiesce to the odds against him once it becomes clear how much he's overpowered—something else retained from his canon personality. Something else he'll retain is his loyalty; in canon, his loyalties were sharply prioritized but his devotion was strong. In Sabra, he'll probably attach to his team very strongly and will be willing to do a great deal for their success.

Itachi 3/?

[personal profile] ivoryandhorn (from insanejournal.com) 2010-07-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
(Blank Personality cont'd)

The most major change to him will be that Itachi's desire for peace and to avoid conflict will no longer be filtered through societal pressure to take up a life of violence. He'll definitely push for non-violent resolutions to conflicts and will avoid battle whenever possible. If pressed, he will strike to disable rather than to kill, and will disengage as soon as he can. However, the potential for him to decide that violence justifies a greater end will always be there. It's just that as long as he's without the memories that nurtured that trait in him in the first place, it's going to take a while to get Itachi to the point where he'll make that call for himself without significant external pressure. When that happens, I expect some of his ruthlessness to surface as well, in the sense of making whatever it is end as fast as possible in order to avoid protracted bloodshed. He won't be happy about it, though, and it's going to cause him a lot of turmoil, maybe even when he does get the requisite memories back.

In that vein, if Itachi regains memories of the violent acts he's committed sans contexts, he's going to be really shaken up. What kind of person was he? What kind of person will he become if he keeps regaining memories? …Does he want to keep regaining memories and become that person? What could have possibly turned him into the kind of person that's done the things he's done? Those are the questions he'll be dealing with. He'll be afraid of knowing, afraid that he's a danger to people around him, and until he knows why it's going shake his sense of self to the core.

Writing Sample:
The blank woke with a feeling of peace. He tried to think of where this peaceful feeling came from, only to find that he couldn't find any cause—couldn't find any reason for not knowing the cause. Couldn’t find any memories at all. The shock jolted him awake, and he found himself in a nondescript rock-cut room, lying in a bed. He had no point of comparison, yet he couldn't shake the sense that something was not right about the scene. As he moved out from under the blankets, a metal object heaved into view. The blank snatched it up before it could fall to the floor, pausing to study the brass tube. He noted that it had been blocked on either end by glass, and he couldn't see what was inside. After a moment of consideration, he peered down the tube's narrow end.

Inside he saw a stranger, a young man with red eyes and long black hair, looking haggard and worn. He wore a nondescript navy shirt and a headband bearing an unfamiliar symbol. "Your -------'s life and sanity are at stake," the stranger said. Despite the small image, his eyes were focused and intent. His voice took on a harder edge as he continued, "Win. I do this willingly."

The blank lifted his head from the tube. "I do this willingly," he said aloud, idly, thinking over the stranger's conviction in those cryptic words. He was jolted by how familiar the voice sounded. Acting on suspicion, he tried looking at the tube's polished side, which threw back a distorted reflection—enough, still, to see that he had the same long dark hair as the stranger.

"Your… blank's life and sanity are at stake," the blank said experimentally, trying to match the inflection of the stranger in the tube. "Win. I do this willingly." The resemblance was eerie enough that he surprised himself. Was the stranger himself, then? Without a better reflection, he couldn't tell for sure.

Life and sanity… the stranger's message certainly sounded dire, whatever that garbled thing was that led the blank to do this willingly. And instructions for winning were meaningless without any indication of what he was supposed to win. On the whole, he thought, not entirely helpful. Or trustworthy, without his memories to verify what the stranger was saying.

Rolo Lamperouge 1/2

[identity profile] crossboundaries.insanejournal.com 2010-08-01 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Rolo Lamperouge (Haliburton)
Canon: Code Geass (”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Geass”)
Reference picture and Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolo_Lamperouge
Point in the time-line taken: Post-death (ep 19, R2).

Character History: Rolo Haliburton was raised in an underground lab, the purpose of which was to turn babies into godless killing machines (much like bears (http://wikiality.wikia.com/Bears)). UNLIKE bears, this included giving them the mystical “Power of Kings”, Geass. Rolo’s Geass ability — the ability to freeze people’s perception of time — was particularly effective and, since age six, he was credited with a wide variety of political assassinations. Which is why, at age 16, he was put onto a very special assignment: Pretend to be the younger brother of the brainwashed Lelouch Lamperouge, who had once been an exiled prince turned would-be government-overthrowing terrorist mastermind known as “Zero”. Should Lelouch show any sign of recovering his memory, Rolo was to kill him. So, for a year, Rolo lived as the completely coddled, beloved younger brother with whom Lelouch was completely besotted.

Unfortunately, what the political higher-ups didn’t consider was the fact that children raised with no love or affection are completely weak to being given love and affection. So it was easy enough for Lelouch, when he did recover his memories, to convince Rolo that he really still loved Rolo as a younger brother despite his being a plant, so Rolo should obviously help him overthrow the government. Everything went Just As Planned for a while, but eventually Rolo learned that Lelouch not only hated him, but had frequently plotted his death. Despite this, Rolo showed up in the nick of time to save Lelouch’s life because he still loved Lelouch and, in the process of overusing his Geass to get Lelouch away from his enemies, died of heart failure. Lelouch finally acknowledged that Rolo was his younger brother in spirit, dug him a grave, and set off to use the time Rolo bought him to save the world.

Motivation: At the time Rolo dies, he’s saving Lelouch from completely certain death, and he wears himself out taking Lelouch as far away as possible and taking out as many people as possible. He wants Lelouch to live, but has no guarantee this will happen for sure because he’s gone as far as he can. Beyond that, his deepest desire while alive was to have a future with Lelouch with the two of them living a normal life. So, after death, if offered the chance to exchange his memories for, eventually, a wish, he’d jump on it with the hopes that he could return to Lelouch’s side to help him and, if he could, claim a good life together after.

Rolo Lamperouge 2/2

[identity profile] crossboundaries.insanejournal.com 2010-08-06 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Canon Personality: Although Rolo is perfectly capable of appearing politely affable, albeit in a distancing way, there is one person in the world he has positive feelings for and one person only, and that is Lelouch. Rolo is obsessed with Lelouch in every possible way, wanting to be the center of Lelouch’s world as much as Lelouch is the center of his. Rolo has found a place as Lelouch’s little brother, and he’ll fight tooth and claw to keep anyone else from infringing on this, showing a particular hatred and jealousy towards girls Lelouch dates or might even show slight interest in (up to and including murdering them). Rolo loves nobody but Lelouch, he trusts nobody but Lelouch, and no matter how much affection any other person offers him, he considers it pale and undesirable compared to the affection he received as Lelouch’s ‘real’ brother. He is a boy with a very, very small world, the very first world of his own he’s ever had, and he won’t let anyone take it from him. Beyond that, he’s a heartless killer -- though he longs for a future where he doesn’t have to kill, and repeatedly demands that Lelouch “keep his promise” to give him that future, he kills with barely a thought, and is incapable of feeling regret or remorse over having done so. It’s more that he dislikes being used as a tool by everyone around him than that he dislikes killing. He is bitter, resentful, and lonely -- not to mention constantly terrified that the will lose the only thing he has ever had for himself. Basically, Rolo’s a tragic little boy who wants love, but has an extremely messed up perception of what this entails and how to keep it.

Blank Personality: As a Blank, Rolo’s going to be pleasant and friendly enough -- more or less the personality he put on with everyone in the school when he was pretending to be Lelouch’s little brother -- but something’s going to be off about it. His smiles won’t reach his eyes, and most of the time the way he interacts with others will likely come off as a little fake. This will be because, although he has an awareness of ‘proper social function’, he had no proper emotional socialization as a child to have developed a base instinctive social personality from; he’ll be mimicking the behavior from knowing how it ‘should’ be, but not feeling any of it. Affable but false. Depending on the personalities of his teammates and how intimately they treat him, as well as the order and number of memories he gets back, he may start to cling to them as a source of emotional fulfillment -- or he may push them away further. It’s hard to say. Ultimately he’ll be selfish, conniving, and lonely under a faux-friendly facade.

Writing Sample:

...I can’t leave things alone; it’s not enough. So I choose this. I do this willingly. The recording stops playing.

Immediately, he looks through the brass tube a second time.

When it doesn’t give him any new information he drops the tube on the bed beside himself and bites his thumb, worrying at the skin around the edge of the nail, and considers what he knows.

...it isn’t much. He doesn’t recognize the person inside the tube, though from the curl of hair on his cheek that matches the one he can see out of the corner of his eye, it might be himself. And not recognizing himself isn’t surprising, under the circumstances: thinking about it, he doesn’t know anything about himself. He doesn’t know this place, either, and though he can hear voices outside his room he can’t imagine who they might be.

His stomach churns at the feeling of being so completely and utterly empty.

But there’s only one way to start to figure this out. He puts on a smile and rises, heading to the door, cracking it open.

“Hello...?”

Jack / Tyler Durden reapp

[identity profile] acoldshoulder.insanejournal.com 2010-08-24 04:02 am (UTC)(link)

Character Name: Jack / Tyler Durden
State before entering the pillar: Lost in caves for four days ): But he was... relatively okayish before that, by Cornelius standards. He was distressed about not remembering things he was told he did, like making the soap and going on the solo mission for the gun, but his latest memory wasn't that bad. And then the caves got him lost and hungry and tired.
Amount of time in the pillar: A month or so, days 133-162ish.
Reaction to having been in the pillar: He did not react well! Coming out of the pillar he'll probably be very easy to scare and will definitely not act the same around his own teammates, especially when he realizes how long he'd been in the pillar and how things have changed. He'll probably fall back on Tyler's persona more as a defense mechanism, especially with his memories of him -- someone like him wouldn't have any sort of trouble with this sort of thing, obviously!!

Adachi Emiri 1/2

[identity profile] assumedposition.insanejournal.com 2010-08-30 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Canon: Air Gear (manga)
Reference picture (”http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/characters/2/71836.jpg”) and Wiki Link (”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Air_Gear_characters”)
Point in time-line taken from: immediately post-Cyberspace-Battle arc

Character History: So you’ve got punks, gangs, and magical rollerblades... and therefore punks in gangs on rollerblades. Trying to save the world. Or at least, that’s Ikki’s story. It’s a slightly different story if you’re Adachi Emiri, in which case you’re mostly just tagging along. Emiri starts off as the captain of the track team, totally unrelated to the world of Air Trek (henceforth A-T for short). She gets involved unwillingly when she’s forced by Ikki’s rival-at-the-time to bully Ikki and deface his property. She’s later saved by his best friend Kazu and of course promptly falls tits-over-arse in love with him. From that point on she resolves to support him in any way she can, mostly in the hopes that he’ll reciprocate her feelings but also because she just hero-worships the guy a whole damn lot. Eventually she’s able to get her hands on her own pair of A-T and joins Ikki’s team. While she’s still no expert rider, she’s going at her own pace. And mowing down everyone in her path.

Motivation: In canon, Emiri is shown to be the sort of person who doesn’t make deep connections with people easily, but once she does, she will protect that person with her life. If she thought Yayoi had gotten herself into trouble, she’d do everything she could to help her.

Canon personality Emiri is shown to develop a considerable amount over the course of the series, especially for a side character. She starts out as a somewhat ditzy teenage girl who is bossy and pushy and isn’t afraid to use that to her advantage against people she thinks will succumb to it. However, it soon becomes clear that she’s not as confident on the inside as she seems on the outside. Emiri is, in reality, scared of a lot more than she lets on. She doubts herself and her abilities at every turn, but instead of showing it, she mans up and puts on a strong face instead of letting others see her weaknesses. She doesn’t have a very strong sense of responsibility-- she often does and says whatever she likes without pausing to think or care of the implications. She also possesses certain beserk-buttons, which often cause her to abandon all reason and harness an almost impossible amount of strength. She’s not exactly crazy, but rather one could say that there are certain situations in which Emiri has selectively decided to throw logical reasoning and acceptable behaviour out the window and instead replaced it with whatever she darn well feels like at the time. To everyone but Kazu-- who is in a special tier of treatment all on his own-- Emiri’s friendship is a lesson in tough love. Especially in combination with her considerably short attention span. She pokes her nose into everything, always in search of the next most interesting thing to entertain her. Teasing will probably be involved, but it’s only friendly, right? What doesn’t kill ‘em will make ‘em stronger!

On the rare occasions when she does feel responsible or guilty, she will try to own up to it and make amends-- even if she really just wants to run away. At heart, Emiri is possibly the gutsiest character in the series, because she is so scared of everything that other people don’t seem to find scary, but in the end she always decides to face her fears head on. Her low self-esteem and sense of self-worth is what causes her to idolize Kazu rather than anything else, because he’s the first person to risk his life for her and show her true kindness despite the fact that she knew she was in the wrong. Eventually, however, Emiri is able to forge tenuous friendships with the other members of Kogarasumaru as well, and comes to realise that she really is part of the team, not just a hanger-on. She still has a tendency to put herself (and Kazu) first, despite being self aware enough to know how selfish she is, but that’s just human nature! You can’t blame her, right? Right. As far as she’s concerned, others would do the same, and that’s the end of it.

Adachi Emiri 2/2

[identity profile] assumedposition.insanejournal.com 2010-08-30 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Blank personality as a blank, Emiri will probably at first start out being more like her “inner” personality-- the one that’s scared and dumb and unsure of herself a lot. This is Emiri’s base personality in canon, the one that only she (mostly) only shows to people she trusts. (Except for the being dumb part, which is more a default state of being.) However her short attention span will save her a lot of hesitation in the beginning as she rarely second guesses herself in the moment, but rather waits until after the fact to do so. However, Emiri also shows in canon that she can adapt to her environment as needed-- in school, the weak and the uncool are teased and the strong and the popular get bossing rights, and this is the basis of her flippant and boisterous outer shell that everybody else sees. Later on, Kogarasumaru needs to depend on her to win a battle, so she sucks it up and does what’s necessary. In a ruthless environment like Sabra, depending on her team, Emiri would either slowly or very quickly learn to do the same and probably revert back to her canon ways of being loud and confident and crazy to cover up her self-perceived-weakness. Given the nature of the game, she could possibly grow to be less flippant than canon but more dangerous, depending-- as Emiri is shown to not be a terribly deep thinker either. She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, so she tends to think in terms of black and white and Emiri-coloured-crazy. Occasionally something happens to make her question this, but she puts it out of her mind with relative ease. She’s the embodiment of act-first-maybe-think-later. So whatever happens, she’ll act impulsively and rarely regretful of her actions.

Writing Sample
The first time she wakes up her first thought is Huh, that’s weird, but not why. It doesn’t bother her for very long though-- she promptly rolls over, yawns, and goes back to sleep.

The second time she wakes up, it hits her-- properly this time-- that something is wrong. Something is very wrong. Something ... is poking into her side?! No wonder she couldn’t sleep properly! She sits up to find the offending object and throw it out of her bed, only to realise ... wait, this is her bed, right? She finds herself with a shiny tube in her hands, and wonders what on earth she was doing sleeping with such a thing. It should probably bother her that she can’t remember who she is right now or that her surroundings are unfamiliar, but right now all she can muster up is a faint sense of irritation that her sleep was interrupted by an inanimate object. It must be important then, she concludes. Question solving first, panic later!

After turning the tube every which way, she finally figures out that oh, you’re supposed to look into it, and watches the scene that unfolds.

There’s a girl there, a young girl, looking into the camera with her arms crossed, adopting a pose of confidence. She opens her mouth dramatically as if to speak something of great importance but then just as suddenly closes it again, as if reconsidering what to say. She “hmmm’s” and looks to the side for a few seconds, before turning front-on again and holding a finger out in front authoritatively. “Kill ‘em dead! Nobody hurts my best friend! ... Oh yeah. Uh. I do this willingly!”

... Huh. That was weird, she thinks, and tosses the tube back onto the bed as she stands up and stretches. She thought it was going to be something more entertaining, but whatever. She can hear voices coming from beyond the bedroom door now, so she figures whatever is going on out there, it’s gotta be more interesting than in here, and heads to the door without a second thought. She hesitates at the doorknob for a second because there’s something she feels like she’s forgetting, but it only lasts a moment. If it’s important she’s sure it’ll come to her later. Onwards!

Shin Seijuurou [1/3]

Your Name: RM

Character Name:  Shin Seijuurou
Canon:  Eyeshield 21
Reference picture and Wiki link:  Kerlink. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seijuro_Shin)
Point in the time-line taken:  Post-series, pre-epilogue.

Character History:

Shin Seijuurou is a fantastically strong football player in a world that revolves around American football.  Ever since he was a child, he had a natural aptitude for sports -- but never would have gotten involved in the game if not for the influence of his best friend (and later teammate), Sakuraba Haruto.  The football team recruited Sakuraba first (due to his height) with Shin as an afterthought, but Shin proved to be extremely good at the sport...and extremely devoted to his training, which only served to make him even stronger.  Even so, Sakuraba's good looks, height, and eventual modeling career meant that Shin often ended up in the shadow of his friend, at least in the eyes of outsiders, although his team always knew who the better player was.  Not that this bothered Shin in the least.  He continued to train and push himself, always ready to seek out a new challenge or a better rival.  And with the combination of natural ability plus a rigorous training routine, Shin was nearly unstoppable.

Enter the Deimon Devil Bats (a rival football team, aka the protagonists).  During their very first game against Shin's team, they got flattened.   However, Shin admitted that, if he should meet someone faster than him, then he would truly have met his match.  For that reason, Hiruma (captain of the Deimon team) recruited teeny-tiny but incredibly speedy Kobayakawa Sena the next year.  Sensing a potential challenge, Shin immediately adopted Sena as his rival, complete with a promise to meet him at the finals later in the year.  Meanwhile, his own team, the Oujou White Knights, continued to train and develop.  This culminated with an intensive summer session atop Mt. Fuji.  Shin's half of the training went a little ... wayward, as what should have been a challenging romp in the forest turned into him getting terribly lost within the first five minutes of training.  (He'd had a GPS with him, but he broke it.  Oops!)

Fast forward to the fall tournament.  Oujou, Deimon, and Seibu (another strong Deimon rival) pushed their way through to the regionals where, at long last, Shin and Sena were able to have their rematch.  Both teams had become a lot more formidable since their last match; Deimon's lineup had filled out and matured, while Oujou had a number of new pass techniques and plays, which relied on Sakuraba's new status as a true second ace for the team.  Even Shin had caught up to Sena's 4.2s Speed of Light Pace, and was once again seemingly unstoppable.  But in the final play of the game, Sena once more managed to outdo him -- this time with a one-man dive -- and Oujou was finally defeated by their rivals.  Oddly enough, Shin was pleased by this final outcome rather than disappointed.  He'd lost, yes, but for the first time, he found himself truly enjoying American football.  He became captain of the White Knights after that, and was one of the top picks for the team representing Japan at the World Cup.

Motivation: While Shin doesn’t have a specific wish to make, he would be drawn by the promise of competition above and beyond anything he could get back home.
