Character History: Sometime in the not-too-distant future, a group of theoretical physicists in the Black Mesa research facility decided to mess with an unknown substance given to them by a mysterious benefactor. Their actions opened hundreds of portals to a hostile alien world across Earth. At the time of this resonance cascade, Alyx was at the epicenter of the event in the research facility, and was saved from the disaster by her father under some mysterious circumstances. While this happened, Earth was defeated by the alien menace called in 7 hours.

So Alyx Vance grew up in a world controlled by alien dictators (called the Combine) who used humans as either hideous puppet monsters or despairing workers. She was raised very closely to the ongoing struggle against our alien overlords because of her father’s involvement in the movement, and as she grew older she would become one of the key members of the resistance. It was through this resistance effort that she happened to save a Doctor Gordon Freeman: Humanity’s Last Hopetm. After a series of escapes and teleportation mishaps, they teamed up to fight the big human traitor and free City 17 from the aliens! And they won!

Unfortunately, this involved destabilizing a very important core, and they narrowly escaped an explosion through very mysterious circumstances. And while the human collaborator had been defeated, the Combine were still around, and they were pissed. Alyx (and the rest of the resistance) could never be satisfied with a world half saved, so a new quest started involving the theft of some serious alien secrets that had to be delivered to another pocket of the resistance. And they did that. Whatever’s next is unfortunately a mystery, because Valve is really good at delaying their games.

Canon Personality: Considering her environment, Alyx has turned out remarkably well. She’s good natured and friendly with almost everyone she encounters, although she can get bratty towards people who condescend to her or are otherwise unpleasant. That last bit can also mean she's stubborn at times when she really shouldn’t be. She has a lot of easy confidence about her on account of being a capable mechanicientist (and a good defender against aliens!) surrounded by some seriously impressive peers. Overall, despite the dystopian surroundings, she can keep up a strong face without it really being a mask. This is mostly out of a conviction that it’s better to keep your head up when you have a choice, although a lot of it is admittedly due to that same stubbornness.

She does acknowledge that there are some situations that can’t be dealt with this way: it’s important to note here that Alyx is the primary NPC counterpart to a silent protagonist, which means she has to carry a lot of the human element of the game. Because of this she mirrors the player’s reactions to many of the atrocities committed by the Combine, and so reveals a sensitivity to suffering that isn't so easily shrugged off.

Her worst quality is probably that she is also unfortunately prone to making some really bad jokes. I mean, awful. It’s endearing.
