Character History:
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is set in an Asian influenced fantasy world in which the Avatar needs to defeat the evil Fire Lord and Save The World! Before the start of the series, Zuko— the Fire Lord's only son— has been banished from his homeland. In order to regain his honor (HONOR!), he must capture the Avatar who disappeared a hundred years ago. Luckily for him, after only two and half years of searching, the Avatar resurfaces and the plot is on.

Zuko repeatedly tries to capture the Avatar through a variety of locales. However, after a lot of failures (and a good dose of Fire Nation politics), he is branded as a traitor to his home country. Unwilling to be taken prisoner, Zuko flees. Now fugitives, Zuko and his uncle disguise themselves as refugees and even adopt simple lifestyles. For a while, it seems as if Zuko has found peace in his new role, however, the universe doesn't let him off that easily.

Eventually, Zuko is forced to make the ever so crucial decision between good and evil. He chooses evil— attacking the Avatar— and fulfilling his father's wishes. Having redeemed himself, Zuko is welcomed home. However, he finds his return strangely unfulfilling. He's uncomfortable in his skin, angry and disappointed in himself. After even more conflicted soul searching, Zuko confronts his father and declares he's going to join the Avatar. From there, he manages to convince the Avatar's group that he's "good" this time (for real) and does his part to help Save The World.

Ultimately, Zuko succeeds his father as king Fire Lord, anyway. He just took the long way around.
